Summary

The ROUTE04 group ride can best be described as one of Pain and Pleasure ! The first 24km leg to Freeling was painful as we rode into a fierce headwind all the way. The wind played havoc on the bikes, the legs and the mind ! We got to the "McLeods Daughters" town in the end and re-grouped. From then on it was all pleasure as we rode with a strong tailwind behind us. We got to Wasleys in super quick time hitting speeds over 45km/h at times.

The final leg back to Gawler was just as pleasurable with the wind helping us average over 40km/h for long stretches. Maximum speed reached on the ride was 51km/h and the group averaged 26.2km/h (a good result considering the tough first leg). We got back to Gawler just a few minutes ahead of the ROUTE05 riders, where we all joined up for a great one hour coffee session at Jaspers (see group photo below). (Frank)

The ROUTE05 group set off with three of the nine riders embarking on the HILL route for the first time and for Richard, it was his first ever major hill climb. The weather was milder than expected and made for good cycling. A jubilant Richard raised his fist in the air after reaching the summit above Mt. Crawford Forest after 453m of steady climbing (see photo below). A slight headwind on the descent into Kersbrook kept the downhill speeds in the low 70km/h range, slightly slower than normal.

The return leg to Gawler was straight forward with the group thinking about the BikeSA Grand Slam in one weeks time and how it would feel different riding the same route under semi-competitive conditions with not the normal group of riders alongside for company. And yes, the ROUTE04 riders had beat us back to Jasper's yet again after their shorter, easier, slacker ride...just joking guys ! (Wilson)

See you on the next Gawler Wheelers Group ride !

All riders are welcome.
