CFFRS Ride Info

Starting from the Tower Hotel at 05.50 am we ride up Norton Summit and onto a predetermined route. Historically the par course was through Ashton then towards the sunrise and Forest Range along the Lobethal Road before returning via Deviation Road through Carey Gully to Uraidla and Summertown.

Other routes have been do ascend or descend Pound Rd, Corkscrew via Gorge Rd or Greenhill Rd ascent.

The ride will take place each week all year round. Regardless* of the weather there will be at least 1 person riding every Friday. Numbers vary from 1 - 5 riders, and the pace is moderate (i.e. will suit riders who can ascend Norton in 18-23 minutes). When the sunrise is particularly spectacular, time will be set aside for a group hug, so the more riders, the bigger the hug!

We regroup at the top of the major ascents, and the return to the city can be via Norton Summit, Greenhill Rd or Mt Lofty.

Decent lights and sense of humour essential!

* Disclaimer - if it is raining before the due start time, it might be a no-goer. But if you are feeling particularly Belgian, turn up, you won't regret just not going!

There is a blogger called Cycling Maven (some might say poor man's Cycling Tips) but his post is nice and quite relevant.Luckily for us in Adelaide we don't have the situation highlighted below. …Continue

Sorry to be a party pooper, but I will be playing with the trucks again tomorrow. As I need to be home early I will be returning via Churchill Rd after the descent from GJRoad if anyone wants to join me

I expect others to enjoy the hills, should be a nice morning - last one in the dark for a few weeks.

Well - the introductory ride with CFFRS - touted as

Convalescent Friday's Flat Ride to Semaphore

Turned more into

Chasing Fridays Freight Route Sunrise

I'm reasonably sure the mistake was that we should have "made a left toin at Albukoykee", but somehow hurtled - lemming like to the sea.

Best idea of the morning was SD's to try and combine the best of both rides - somehow requires a Cibo at Ashton, so might be a bit problematic.

Snap of Don - just before he says - Jeez its bloody windy!

Quite entertaining playing tag with the busses - I must tell my mom about it, I'm sure I remember, when I was a child,  her telling me to "go play on the road with the trucks!"

Oh - and by the way - what sunrise?

Drop bears! Holy crap... and we're not talking about the Sydney Band from the 80s.

I did think while stopped near Ashton that cows must get lonely at night.

Someone seems to have turned the lights and temperature off in the morning, and it is taking me a bit of time to find my inner-Belgian.

I got up and went outside, and got rained on. In retrospect it was probably the strong wind in the trees shaking the earlier rain off the leaves. So back to my warm bed! Not the first time I have been faked out by my forest of trees!

So apologies to Gus for leaving him alone to the terrors of the Norton Summit drop-bears.

Nice to see you all. I needed to prove more than Garmin stats I got out of bed.

It was pretty dark and there wasn't many riders on NS, a couple came down then around the final bend I met a big roo so I stopped to let it move over the guard rail but my solo breakaway continued after that with a higher than usual number of cars on the Lobethal Rd between NS and Ashton. No sign of the garbage truck and still it was dark as I descended from Marble Hill but by the time I hit the burbs I only needed the Cygolite on flash.

While I expected rain it didn't eventuate and the wind wasn't a problem until the descent.

A big thanks to SD, DH and Michael for joining me this morning on our rebel with a cause version of CFFRS. The cause being to see if I had the ability to actually concentrate a little on my pedal stroke, bend my arms to relax and help my back, and get used to my slightly modified bike setup. I think it actually worked, the bike setup felt fine. Although I had to constantly remember and concentrate on the others, I think I actually did quite well and is something I will have to work on til it becomes second nature.

The other cause was to try and work on DH's leg. Hopefully he isnt going lame and one of us will have to shoot him on the track. I bit of physio may be the trick on that one, or it could just be the fact he has done some huge rides this year - hope it gets better.

As for the ride, it was relatively flat (as organised), a bit longer than organised, windier than hoped, more traffic than hoped esp trucks. I think we pushed ourselves pretty well as we could have been exused for taking it a bit easy as the flat isnt really our game.

The ride made appreciate riding in the hills even more than before, especially first thing in the morning - less traffic, better scenery, actually use your front derailleur and better variety of the ride.

Special note must also go to Special K for turning up at the Tower only to be left by himself and his Garmin to head into those scary dark hills by himself.

Have a good weekend!

Thanks, Snappy_don, Smiling_Assassin and Dark_Horse for this morning's ride. I hope Special K and ET had a safe ride up the hills.   See you sometime in May. Michael.

A different CFFRS for me this week. Convalescent Friday's Flat Ride to Semaphore.

Assassin and Dark_Horse are both on the flat-road to recovery from injuries, so instead of the usual hills a few of us will do a loop around the Adelaide plain. We'll still meet the grimpeurs at the Tower at the usual time, before heading west for a coffee on the coast.

I used to have that rule Gus. Now I have a new one.

1/ pull on MOTU jersey.

2/ read logo on the left shoulder first, then the right (in that order)

3/ If it's REALLY raining (as opposed to this morning's drizzle) take a jacket...

;-))

I don't feel so bad if the Smiling Assassin didn't go out. I do have a personal 'rule'. If it's raining when I need to leave I don't go - I don't mind getting rained one once I am out. I am also working on a new rule.. learn to break that 1st rule.
