CFFRS Ride Info

Starting from the Tower Hotel at 05.50 am we ride up Norton Summit and onto a predetermined route. Historically the par course was through Ashton then towards the sunrise and Forest Range along the Lobethal Road before returning via Deviation Road through Carey Gully to Uraidla and Summertown.

Other routes have been do ascend or descend Pound Rd, Corkscrew via Gorge Rd or Greenhill Rd ascent.

The ride will take place each week all year round. Regardless* of the weather there will be at least 1 person riding every Friday. Numbers vary from 1 - 5 riders, and the pace is moderate (i.e. will suit riders who can ascend Norton in 18-23 minutes). When the sunrise is particularly spectacular, time will be set aside for a group hug, so the more riders, the bigger the hug!

We regroup at the top of the major ascents, and the return to the city can be via Norton Summit, Greenhill Rd or Mt Lofty.

Decent lights and sense of humour essential!

* Disclaimer - if it is raining before the due start time, it might be a no-goer. But if you are feeling particularly Belgian, turn up, you won't regret just not going!

There is a blogger called Cycling Maven (some might say poor man's Cycling Tips) but his post is nice and quite relevant.Luckily for us in Adelaide we don't have the situation highlighted below. …Continue

I'd enjoy kicking back over a brew, but I think I'll drag my sorry ass over some hills tomorrow. Enjoy the poop farm..

Before setting off from home this morning I consulted the BOM rain radar.  The rain cell was centered on Meadows and estimating its progress as slow I calculated an Adelaide CBD ETA around 6:30 am. I comforted by the thought that we should avoid the worst of the weather on the ride to the palandromic paradise known as GlenelG.

On my ride to the Red Berry Espresso start I saw a cyclist fly past the end of Hectorville Road as I has about half way along the road. I put my head down and worked up Glynburn Road and due to a fortuitous light change was able to catch the cyclist (Gus). We continued together to RBE. Two other riders, Jv and ET had assembled at RBE. All four of us set off with a mission to tackle the damp tarmac and negotiate the hazards of the Anzac Highway.

The early pace was frenetic set by ET and Gus. JV and I were sitting back discussing our riding form or lack there of. ET felt we were not entering into the spirit of the ride i.e. not taking the ride seriously enough and cajoled JV and I to do our bit setting the pace. The light sequence down Anzac Highway was not at all user friendly with many a stop interrupting our otherwise clockwork cycling cadence.

As we neared Glenelg the road became miraculously dry and the pace lifted for the the foreshore sprint and the piece de resistance Alp de Pat with line honours going to the ever stalking Tiger or evers talking Tiger.

With a gentle zephyr on our backs we cruised back up Anzac Highway with ET doing interval training gradually raising the pace to 38 km/h and then dropping back. We were greated with a gentle sprinkle around South Road that continued to RBE.  On arrival at RBE we found the store was shut tight as Walter was a little delayed.  JV true to his word shouted us all a warm refreshment on Walter's arrival.  After which we said our adieus and hightailed our way home or to work.

Man'd Up and put the wet weather gear on, but it didn't really rain - although the shot-creted road grime look made us look a lot harder than we really were!

Thanks to JV, Gus & Michael for the ride. I think that getting to the coffee shop after opening, but before the owner gets there, should qualify us for free coffees?

I think I need to commit to this ride a bit more - will phone Red Berry ahead of time to have 4 jumbo espressos waiting on our return, and have the missus pre-heat the shower so I can take myself and the bike straight into it when I get home.

... now where is that thermal (everything)?

See you tomorrow morning I hope my booties dry over night. It was a little wet on the ride home.

Yep, more enthused about coffee than riding though.
