Ride Summary

This week we are giving away a copy of the book “IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BIKE by Robert Penn. All AC members can enter. All you need to do is post on this ride report a “Why did the chicken cross the road?” joke. Every joke goes into the barrel and the winning entry will be drawn at the GW Ride Brief next Saturday. Closes Friday night at 6.00 pm. The book will be posted to the lucky winner.

Prior to the ride we were joined by AC member Don Nairn who dropped by to say hi to the GWs. Great to meet you Don! We also welcomed newbie Jonah…(rode brilliantly!). 32 riders set off this morning on the 24km leg to Two Wells. A gusty cross-wind did not slow the group down and we arrived at Two Wells in record time. (Who was the male rider who went into the female toilets there??)

Not long after we started the Virginia leg we heard calls from the front group of riders of “Chicken Up”. Yes, we had to slow down for a chicken crossing the road!! Why did the chicken cross the road???

Following the regroup at Virginia we made quick time down Penfield Road to join the Stuart O’Grady Bikeway. That’s where the fun really started. The SOB bikeway had been swept during the week so the super smooth surface was clean as a whistle. That, coupled with a terrific tailwind, meant that we slammed the last 20km with all riders averaging 30-40kph on the leg home. Our Tail End Charlie (Mick) said this morning that we had to be back by 10.30 as he had a wedding to go to.  We have to keep our TECs happy, so in great riding conditions we did just that and arrived back home by 10.00!

Back at Jaspers Café we were pleasantly surprised to see Reidy and Matthew waiting for us, fresh from their Ride4Repat experience. While we were sipping on our coffee they gave the group a fantastic insight into their recent epic ride. Thanks for joining us this morning guys and well done on your achievement!

NEXT WEEK: For all those who are not going away we will be holding one group ride on EASTER SATURDAY through the beautiful Barossa Valley. YOU are welcome to join us. Check AC “Events” for the details.  Today’s photo gallery follows:

More press coverage in the local paper this week

Just got this message. Thank's Terry, but it's not about us. It's all about the bike!! All those who ride with Gawler Wheelers deserve the credit...they make it such a rewarding experience.

Finally, the chicken crossing the road just after we left Two Wells.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

Bill Clinton: "I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What's your definition of crossing".

Einstein: "Did the chicken really cross the road or did the road move beneath the chicken?"

Gawler Wheelers is all about comradeship, fun, fitness and chasing our dreams. Join the GW group on AC. Come on our rides. Contact details below. Until next week >> Cheers for now...Frank.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

She's skulking away in shame because Easter Bunny is moving in this week and lays far superior eggs of chocolate!

“Why did the chicken cross the road?” It was a Strava Segment and wanted to beat the TEC.

Another great adventure today. Thanks for all the fun fellow Gawler Wheelers! I made a few little clangers along the way;

Firstly, I arrived at Gawler by 2 wheels for the first time. I didn't want to be late so left home at 6.00 am and found myself at Jasper's at 6.30am. Oops! So spent some time adjusting the end stops because I had a bit of trouble with the gear changes though the week. And was nice to have a chat and relax a bit before heading off. And a big thanks to Brett for giving me his spare wheel magnet for my computer this morning. Wished I remembered to look at it during the ride!

Then soon after heading down the SOB I found myself sitting in behind Paul and Terry. 'Why so slow?' I am hardly pushing and have to keep backing off. So went around to try to catch up with the pack and then I found out just how much difference a bit of shelter from the wind actually makes!! But enjoyed trying to work with them, and Mick, in a group of four, sharing the lead to Two Wells.

Now if I could only work out how to change to font size #2. When I do, I could throw some light on who needs to lift their head and read before dashing into the loo. Obviously a man in a hurry!

Well, after learning a lesson about drafting, I promptly forgot it all, and for some reason I just dashed off to Virginia on my own. Not sure what I achieved, or what I was trying to achieve. Did the same thing heading out of Virginia. Busted my boiler trying to tag on to the back of the big bunch just 150 metres ahead. And after five minutes watched Dale and a couple of others cruise past effortlessly. Hmm!? Wished I could have surged and dropped in behind them. In my dreams!

I missed the downwind dash back to Gawler unfortunately, but after a wind down ride back down Womma Road, the computer showed 24km/hr for the 50km Gawler/Two Wells/Virginia/home. A target to beat next time.

Well done Terry for your PB average today, and nice to have finally met you. Great to ride with you and Paul to Two Wells. And must not forget Mick who pushed out in front for a good part of that trip. Sorry for letting the 'team' down on the next leg. I am a slow learner Paul!

Not a problem John. Always happy to lend a hand or in this case a magnet (:

And the chicken. I reckon it was just 'playing chicken' with Frank and his camera. Chicken came off second best . .

'Here comes Frank. I've heard of this trigger happy guy with his quick draw reflexes. Just how good is he?'

He's good!

Here comes Frank. One hand on the handle bar. Or maybe none. 30 km/hr. 'Do you feel lucky chick?'  -  Bang - 'Got ya'!!

I couldn't even 'shoot' an echidna crossing the road one night. I was trying for a shot of the moon over the river near Bow Hill. I used the sunset setting. But the moon came out shining just a tad too bright. And then I heard a little noise behind me. An echidna was crossing the dirt road just a couple of metres away. I couldn't even get the settings organised on my automatic camera before this real fast mover (LOL) had finished the crossing and was trying to hide at my feet.

Want me to lend a hand pics Frank?

John, that photo of the moon is really eerie and pretty. Very nice.

The echidna needs to work a little on his disguise...

The new garmin probably slowed me a little bit with all the numbers and stats I was keeping my eyes on. Great piece of equipment (:

And another great ride with great company.. Plenty more rides to come :)

Why did the Roman chicken cross the road? She was afraid someone would Caesar!

Why did the chicken RUN across the road? She had to get to the other side before being run over by 32 cyclists!

Another great ride with good company as always. Average of 29.2 for the 65kms which I was pretty happy with (I normally average around high 27's).

WoW Lorraine  almost the 30 mark.. Maybe we should have pushed just THAT little harder during the last 10k..

Great average hey :)  See you on Sat ?

@ Terry. Maybe if we weren't all "socialising" so much on the way back we would have reached that 30!! I won't be riding next Sat (unfortunatley) as we are going to be playing "grey nomads" for the weekend! Catch you all the following week though!

Why did the chicken cross the road? Because it wanted a spokes shave.
