Any good news stories about local councils providing/improving cycling infrastructure- secure bike parking, shared use paths, bike lanes etc? Who's doing a good job of encouraging cycling?

Not Campbelltown!

There is a US website which rates neighbourhoods by their walkability (creating a walk score out of 100) (Walk Score). They even have an apartment search that finds apartments based on how long and what mode of transport you would like to use for your commute. A 2010 research paper analysed real estate market values and investment returns by walkability score and found that for every 10 point increase in walkability there was a 1-9 % increase in market value (depending on the property type). Eventually developers and governments (local, state and federal) are going to cotton on that making the neighbourhood bike and pedestrian friendly doesn't just improve health it actually makes people money.
