Which is the best local council for cyclists?
Any good news stories about local councils providing/improving cycling infrastructure- secure bike parking, shared use paths, bike lanes etc? Who's doing a good job of encouraging cycling?

There is a place called Goslar, its near Braunschweig/Hannover, I hear they are doing great things, its approx 15k km's but that is the nearest I can think of.

I report many cycling hazards and lobby for improved cycling infrastructure in Adelaide Greater Metropolitan Area. So in a position to state that in SA the best council to support cycling is Adelaide City Council. Most cycling hazards fixed promptly and staff willing to consider my requests for cycling infrastructure.
In Victoria I would place Yarra first.

A pretty average effort from Adelaide Hills Council. Bike lanes halfway down the main street of Stirling and then they disappear. A few years back they decided to modify the street from pedestrian crossing down to Stirling Pub roundabout.......made the road so narrow one cyclist and car can't fit in one lane.

I know what you mean Martin. Are those disappearing bike lanes the only cycling infrastructure in the Hills council? Amy Gillett bikeway is a great shared-use recreational path, but not suited to fast road cyclists, and you still need to negotiate traffic in Woodside. Is there anything for every day cyclists? I'd love to see park & ride facilities for bikes with secure lockers etc. Why not bike racks on buses too? I know that's not a council responsibility though. Mount Barker council does have some paths, but cycling in the hills is not well-served when it comes to infrastructure.

Front bike racks on buses got knocked back in sydney due to pedestrian safety concerns, They were concerned about people getting hurt more if hit by buses.
For some reason the city of sydneys argument "if you get hit by a bus, you get hit by a bus." was ignored.
Something to keep in mind if the push picks up.

The Amy Gillett bikeway is probably the only serious effort Ive seen the AHC take to cater for cyclists. In Stirling there are cafes frequented by cyclists especially in the weekend but nowhere to park your bike. Im currently trying to convince a couple of the cafes to approach the council and remedy the situation.

Their backstreets with pedestrianised sections (that force rat runners back onto the main roads) are pretty bloody good.

How do you define best?
spending lots of money on council officers with titles like cycling development officer?
or forcing developers to include non car based parking or other options in their shop developments?
Certainly forcing developers to put in bike racks to a reasonable standard would not cost the council a lot but it could improve the amount of cycling that happens.
Even facilities for dog walkers (such as a spot to tie up/park your dog) would not cost developers much but unless councils force developers to do this it is unlikely to happen.
While painting a magic while like on a road that is meant to stop cars from hurting cyclists is nice personally I would avoid nost main roads if posibal also the magic white lie often seems to diapeat just when the cyclist needs it most.
Sadly the magic often doesn't seem to work on the cars that the cyclists need the most protection from.

We just build a 4 storey apartemnt building in the city(Storr st), it has no car parking, only scooter and bike racks.
All sold and mostly rented at very good prices, not students either.
Doing another right now, 13 apartments with 7 car parks and 6 scooter and bike parks.
Its not forcing developers to do anything, you cant force a pub to sell certain things, its what the Councils lets us build. We love to do a building with no car parks all the time, would make sense and bring building costs way down and hence more affordable housing.
Cycling is a high risk sport or way of communting, thats just how it is. Be careful out there.
