Took the family down to the Brewery Riverbank display last night.  And the amount of riders I saw without lights on was astounding.  I dont think i would even ride down South road but without lights is a death wish. One rider on Port Rd without them couldnt believe it.

By the way who rides with lights on during the day.  I have started doing it a bit now after seeing few riders doing it on Galwer Wheeler rides. Seems to be effective if you have really powerfully lights.

Strange, its like would a RAAF airman jump out of a plane without a parachute? Ah, no coz it would be dangerous and a parachute(no, not a GW vest) is a safety device, such as lights for bicycles or any intended vehicle.

Last night was a blast coming down Mt. Lofty with AVO, Patrick, Clive, Peter, Con and alot more name to those AC faces and we all had our lights on High beam!! I remember coming down and right behind AVO, his rear lights worked almost too good...I couldnt see nothing besides red flashes over and over in my eyes, then out of nowhere he puts the brakes on..I wasnt ready and ditched my bike right almost into the gutter!!

So its ok to have lights, but try not too blind people, or maybe if you are being blind like i was dont stay up someones behind and be blinded...stay back.

@ mathew AVO is well aware how bright his real lights are as we have the same problem on thursday nightriders so nobody wants to ride behind him, best to back off or give him some stick to tone it town.Have to say that on the downhill from lofty at night why would you be that close to the rider in front??

Thats a reasonable observation actually, and well noted. Coming down a hill at night, no matter how well you may think you know the slope is not a good idea and I was probably about 1-2 bike lengths back which isnt really enough at speeds of 70km/h or so.

I cant explain my reasons other than I felt my ride up was so smooth and fast, I wanted a good down run to match..no excuse, just plain silly. Descending is more fun rolling down easy any who...."blows a rasperry!"

=D

There is a dude who rides up the veloway in the morning with his light flashing it temporarily blinds me as I am going down the hill at speed it is quiet dangerous sometimes if I cope him on a bend. There is enought light to see and there is no cars

Hate being blinded by lights.

Very inconsiderate.

Last night I forgot my lights but had to ride home....lots of motorists did see me without lights and launched abuse at me so no doubt that I did get seen. On nights I have the lights cars quiye frequently pull out of side streets not seeing me....go figure that one out....but I normally do ride with lights but assume always nobody will see or notice me...

@ rob, thats like saying i had a drink too many BUT HAD to drive home pissed,no such think as had to you didnt have lights so should not have been on the road after dark, imagine if car drivers had the same mentality!!!! bad form and a bad example to set as a cyclist.

In fact, just stay home. Going outside your house is too dangerous!

I think the problem with lights is when they are flashing peeps find it harder to judge distance. However I did have a lady step out in front of me and her excuse was " i didnt see you, your lights were too bright"

Lots of cars on the road with no lights when I ride home after work. Happened about twice when i have had no lights like when front and rear lights failed in a hail storm and the other night I forgot to put them on the bike...Generally in that casexjust stuck over on the left and kept the speed down.

@ rob well when you get hit by a car with no lights on and they say they didnt see you because you didnt have lights either you can both have fun playing the blame game, thats if your still alive.

All im really saying is that as a cyclist we remain unseen as long as motorists are not aware or not thinking there could be a cyclist out there. Yes agree shouldnt be riding without them...but its a bit like the odd cyclist forgetting to put their helmet on. Be aware of the unexpected and most times you should be okay.
