What's wrong with SRAM?
I've had my latest bike for 2 years now and it came with SRAM Red groupset and SRAM S40 wheels. I have found the SRAM product to very good and have had no trouble in using or maintaining the various components. I have noticed that when someone posts on this site for advice re which wheels or groupset to go with that SRAM rarely gets a mention. I haven't had much experience with the other brands at an equivalent level but am interested in why SRAM doesn't get recommended all that often. I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts as I'm getting a bit paranoid! I don't intend to start a discussion about which is best but does SRAM stack up against the other brands?

I have the Force groupset replacing the Tiagra 9 spd, which I had no trouble with at all. The double-tap shifting I like after some experience with it and my hill climb times went down. I broke the chain within a month, which I had never done before, but feel that I was a bit rough. So I carried around a chain tool and spare powerlink for months while being more gentle on the shifting. I now have an Ultegra 11-28 cassette and new Dura-ace chain to match it for hilly rides as the SRAM 11-28 was not easily available. I am assured that mix and match is OK between Shinmano and SRAM, so whatever works, as I improved my hill climb times again.

Sorry to ask a really noobie question, but how do you pronounce SRAM? My LBS doesn't stock it, so I've actually never heard the brand mentioned in person. (I know, I know, I need to come out from under my rock more often!)
Is it "Ess - Ram" or is it simply "Sram" as one word, akin to "Sam" with an "r" inserted after the "S"??

on that topic, do they always leave the T out of shimano? ;) (and yes I use it on all 3 of my bikes, but you can poke fun at yourself sometimes)

I have yet to experience better so I really can't comment on how good or bad shimano is. I just hope going the ultegra route will pay off for some reliability at least

There is a claim here from someone that they have an FAQ from the website which says
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What does SRAM mean?
R: SRAM is the conglomeration of our founder's [sic] names, Scott, Ray and sAM. The initials
provided a simple way to come up with a corporate name that could be trademarked and directly
translated into languages other than English. It is not pronounced S-RAM, SchRAM, or SkRAM.
Just SRAM.I can't see that quote on their website anymore.

You could just put a foot in every camp, Campy shifters, SRAM frt chainset(APEX) and Shimano derailleurs

That would not be accurate as both Ford and Holden/GM have piss poor quality control, no innovation and need massive government subsidy to stay afloat.
A better description would be Audi/SRAM and BMW/Shimano; Audi are solid reliable cars with a little flash and BMW are a substance with little concern for looks. Campy would be like Alfa, when it works it works well but breaks down on a regular basis.
