Having had a busy weekend involved with bikes that didn't involve many Km of riding it made me wonder what I wanted from cycling.
The cargo bike picnic seemed popular but cargo bikes would be close to the opposite of road bikes that are also popular
Cycling could be used for transportation but some people carry their bikes on cars.
Cycling could be used as an excuse to be outside but some people ride at the superdrome.
Cycling could be used for health and fitness but some people ride as if they have a death wish.
Cycling could be used to see different places but some people ride the same route all the time.
Cycling could be used to help save the environment but some cyclists own a car and use it for trips they could easily use the bike for.
Cycling could be used to be part of the elite rich crowd but many cyclists use basic older bikes.
Can cycling be an enigma?
It seems likely it is different things for different people clearly some people are competitive and athletic but some people aren't
Certainly I enjoy seeing different things that I wouldn't normally see the speed (or lack of speed compared to a car) and silence of a bike gives a different view of the world than traveling in a car.
What do you want from your cycling?
Phil, start racing with me as that will get you motivated big time, race against other fella's and feel smashed afterwards
That's very likely to happen - been looking at PACC fees.
You forgot to mention who started you on the cycling thing in the first place :-)
For me, I wanted to be able to do a sport that I would thoroughly love but would also help me with my Rheumatoid Arthritis as well as Bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP). This destroyed my lungs to 75% max capacity about 6-7 years ago rendering any activity strenuous and short of breath from the lung scarring. Doctors considered me on the down hill slope and pumped me full of drugs. I hated the thought of me being 27 at the time considered for a slow inactive lifestyle. So I chose to fight.
I never really liked running although I did it to start with as it was cheap and easy to do but soon took it's toll on my joints.
I decided to join a gym, did spin classes and soon learned to love cycling so I bought a bike and the obsession took off from there.
Now when I ride, I like to set myself some small goals which I aim to achieve. So far I am doing a lot more than I have ever done in my life by the way of riding. I find cycling is my early mid life crisis. It's keeping me the fittest I have ever been, keeping my weight down, and is keeping the doctors quiet. Something I like to almost brag about to them. (proudly not arrogantly) But most doctors are left baffled at my progress and improvement despite the opposite for other people. So far I am the only out patient that has made significant improvements against RA that they have ever seen. My lung capacity is now up to 85% and climbing.
My aim is to be completely off my medication for good by the way of holistic thinking, stringent dieting, and cycling and leading a fuller quality of life.
So far I am on course, but its still a long way and it will be something that I am prepared to fight.
I have added additional goals now, and that is to ride bigger, longer rides, increase my lung capacity to near 100% again, and do things that I have never done before.
Go all the way...
Go for a vegan lifestyle!
Cheers. My wife is a vegetarian/vegan and is trying to convert me. I generally eat a lot of her type of meals weekly but like to indulge in the occasional carnivorous meal every now and then.
Very little take out food if at all any. No soft drinks, very little alcohol. I have months old bottles of scotch in my cupboard. Beer once in a while, but rare.
So far cutting down on sugar foods, heavy greasy foods, and increasing water intake has helped heaps.
Excellent Shav Bird! Keep at it, give those docs something to think about.
That is awesome man, well done + keep up the good work!
I love hearing stories like yours Shav Bird, inspiration to get on when its cold and wet - i know its good for my asthma, my destroyed back, and keeps the black dog at bay, but when I think about things like what you have offered, i stop seeing it as an option and more of a privilege.
If you dont use it, you lose it...
Love your work.

1. To make my self looks good (at least not fat)
2. I am falling in love with my Bianchi (even my friend starting say that my bicycle is my new girlfriend)
3. I hate public transport (getting other people's odor and infection? ewww....)
4. The satisfied feel after you reach destination by your own power
5. To check out cyclist girl. (oh yeah.....if you know what I mean)
