Having had a busy weekend involved with bikes that didn't involve many Km of riding it made me wonder what I wanted from cycling.

The cargo bike picnic seemed popular but cargo bikes would be close to the opposite of road bikes that are also popular

Cycling could be used for transportation but some people carry their bikes on cars.

Cycling could be used as an excuse to be outside but some people ride at the superdrome.

Cycling could be used for health and fitness but some people ride as if they have a death wish.

Cycling could be used to see different places but some people ride the same route all the time.

Cycling  could be used to help save the environment but some cyclists own a car and use it for trips they could easily use the bike for.

Cycling could be used to be part of the elite rich crowd but many cyclists use basic older bikes.

Can cycling be an enigma?

It seems likely it is different things for different people clearly some people are competitive and athletic but some people aren't

Certainly I enjoy seeing different things that I wouldn't normally see the speed (or lack of speed compared to a car) and silence of a bike gives a different view of the world than traveling in a car.

What do you want from your cycling?

+1 on reason number 2!!

To get from A to B.  Sometimes because I need to, sometimes because I have taken upon myself the obligation to, sometimes going the long way round, sometimes because I merely feel like it (in which cases B is often a continuously variable point).

But there is also lots of pleasure in getting from B to A, especially when there is no time pressure.

"like" :-)

big like!

I bough my bike two years ago because it seemed like a good idea at the time, I hadn't ridden in probably ten years or more because where i live there are hills everywhere. Fortunately for me I discovered two thing AC and Jim Woods (not together I found them both separately). Jim inspired to me to ride every week up increasingly steeper terrain and longer distances. AC put me in contact with other riders daft enough to want to do the same thing.

I ride to keep fit and because it is such good fun, a great stress relief, a perfect social vehicle, and as I'm now discovering a competitive outlet as well. I just ride now because I love my bike and it would be wrong to leave it in the shed for ten years like the last one.

well said Pat. I too find riding a great stress reliever. Feels good to get out and feel the wind in your face and knowing your getting fitter by doing it. The competitive side is something I plan to work towards. Not professionally but more on the lines of competing against myself.

Tight Buns !!
only joking ,, health & happiness ,,I've always had tight buns ..  8~)

To recapture the simple sense of having fun .... takes me back to my youth.

I justify the fun by claiming it helps with keeping my weight in check, is healthy for myself and the environment and has great parking options in the city.
