Having had a busy weekend involved with bikes that didn't involve many Km of riding it made me wonder what I wanted from cycling.

The cargo bike picnic seemed popular but cargo bikes would be close to the opposite of road bikes that are also popular

Cycling could be used for transportation but some people carry their bikes on cars.

Cycling could be used as an excuse to be outside but some people ride at the superdrome.

Cycling could be used for health and fitness but some people ride as if they have a death wish.

Cycling could be used to see different places but some people ride the same route all the time.

Cycling  could be used to help save the environment but some cyclists own a car and use it for trips they could easily use the bike for.

Cycling could be used to be part of the elite rich crowd but many cyclists use basic older bikes.

Can cycling be an enigma?

It seems likely it is different things for different people clearly some people are competitive and athletic but some people aren't

Certainly I enjoy seeing different things that I wouldn't normally see the speed (or lack of speed compared to a car) and silence of a bike gives a different view of the world than traveling in a car.

What do you want from your cycling?

freedom.....and the wind through my hair.

the wind through my hair

Rofl, I wondered why you were cycling with your jersey zip undone.

I just want it to be safer.

I ride to work because it is the cheapest and easiest way to get there - thanks mainly to the route I take. Cycling to other places is often a battle.

I would like riding a bike to be so safe that my children could ride to school every day. They ask to all the time. A few children wobble along the pavement peering from underneath their oversized helmets. It is not long before they will be too old to do that and they will stop. They will probably never ride a bike again until they turn 40 and suddenly have a burning desire to buy a road bike and dress in weird tight-fitting outfits.

But hey, that's just me.

+1 on the children.  It always scared me too much that I was pleased when they decided just to talk.  The schools are magnets for cars full of parents running late and don't even think about the year 12's.

Have you thought about running a 'bicycle bus' ?  You get a few other kids and their parents and take in turns to shepherd a group of kids on bikes to the school.  I have heard others talk about these in the past.

What did thisBurnside Council resolution come to ?

If you really want it safer don't cycle on the roads.

The evil car drivers make cycling more hazardous.

no, you aint alone there buddy...

Ask not what you want from cycling ...  but what cycling wants from you....

It wants your bones!

It wants to smash them and crack them...

speaking from recent personal experience.

it wants to melt my spare tyre :D

For me it's an escape, some time for myself, an exploration. It keeps depression away, mostly. I love the sense of achievement. To me its the ideal marriage of human and machine. I can sense my riding and skill level steadily improving. I find joy in getting up a hill (the joy comes AFTER the pain). I eat and drink a lot healthier - clean fresh foods. I've gone from being a middle-aged smoker who breathed heavy just going up stairs to being able to do the TDU with a 29kph ave and feel great at the end. I want my son to have a good role model, and I want to be around for him longer - cycling is giving me that. I'm not interested in competition - but if there is someone ahead of me on my daily commute watch out!

Cycling - I just flat out love it.

What do I want from cycling? A bloody big smile on my face.

Initially as an alternative to running (I hate running), then I discovered strava, then the muddies, then riding to work, my fitness improved, my knee stopped hurting, my wallet emptied (several times), now I'm looking at competing and stop playing competitive squash.

It's taken over my life!
