Ride Summary
During today’s ride brief we recalled that on this day in 1956 the song “HEARTBREAK HOTEL” hit #1 on the charts and became the best-selling single that year. Rock & Roll was born and our music would never be the same again! Appropriately the GW ride today was dedicated to THE KING….ELVIS.
Wilson during the ride brief also announced that after scouring the globe, in our quest to continuously improve the Gawler Wheelers experience, a new concept would be introduced to our rides….THE WHISTLE. I will let others tell you all about it.
We had quite a few newbies join us today. Dan’s friend Kate came along for the first time and had a really great ride, as did newbie Carl. AC member and Audax Guru Claudio also joined us today, together with his sister Aurelia who is visiting from Sydney and his son Gianluca. Welcome to you all.
In another big surprise pro-cyclist Jack Bobridge’s Dad, Karl, joined us again for another GW ride together with partner Elaine. Naturally we all have our fingers crossed that our local hero, Jack, takes out GOLD at the London Olympics.
It is difficult to find the superlatives to describe today’s GW ride. The 60km route took the 51 of us through the beautiful Barossa Valley via Lyndoch, Williamstown, the Warren Reservoir, the Whispering Wall and back home. The rain held off, the temp was just right, the road surfaces were a joy to ride on, there was no wind and you could not wish for better company. This route has it all….such as inclines to satisfy the hills riders and help others improve their climbing skills. Gentle undulations let everyone put their foot down if they wish and glorious descents provide the rewards for the hard work. A MAGNIFICENT RIDE! (Keen to hear what others thought!)
One of the things we love about GW is the interesting people you meet and the wonderful new friends you make. After the ride we got chatting to newbie Claudio and what an interesting story he has to tell. He is 63 years of age and only started cycling 3 years ago. He had a diabetes problem then and weighed in at 110kgs. Since then he has shed 30kgs! In August 2011 he rode the 17th PARIS-BREST-PARIS Randonneur, (PBP), the most famous long-distance randonnée. 5,000 riders participated including 110 Aussies. The PBP is over 1,230 kms and there is a 90 hour time limit. Claudio finished the ride in 89 hours & 45 minutes and he describes it as his ultimate achievement. FANTASTIC Claudio…what an inspirational story….you are THE KING!!
WOW…..ANOTHER SENSATIONAL Gawler Wheelers morning!

Looking at the stats, I sat in the top 10% of my heart rate for 30% of the ride and another 50% of the ride in the 80-90% bracket, for a total distance of 79.6 km from home to Gawler and back. Couldn't stop as had things to do so missed the coffee and chat :(.
It's absolutely amazing how good it is to ride in a group, particularly when you've been out of it for a while. They drag you along and motivate you to do better. It's easy to forget how good going out with the Wheelers is. Everybody is nice, you even get your photo on the wall (Thanks Frank) and there is time to recover at each regroup. Everybody is safe, there are lots of lights and drivers notice you. SO if you haven't been with us come along, and if you've been out for a while like me, get back in the saddle it's excellent. Thanks Wilson, Frank and all the riders. Let's hope the weight also comes off too now that I'm back on my trusty steed Scotty!
Permalink Reply by Frank (GW) on April 22, 2012 at 14:40 Glad to see you enjoyed the ride Old Macdonald and it was good to see you back yesterday. Thanks also for the GW plug! Now mate....I bet you didn't know that Elvis also sang a song all about you...check the vid out :-)
Permalink Reply by Old Macdonald (Jon) on April 22, 2012 at 14:45 No I didn't. But I do have two chicks at home and about 100 birds!
The beauty that is the Barrossa valley region and the surrounding councils is something you DO NOT sleep in and miss such a ride that takes in its world class scenery and interntionally renowned wine regions, with a group who will guide you there and encourge(and challenge) you along the way. Was a good group too with Jack Bobridge's own Father riding with us...whoa man! I was a bit in awe bit, and couldnt really form any words that would make a conversation with him..Jack Bobridge is my favourite cyclist and a legend of Adelaide, so i folded. LOL
I had a good 'go of it' today and let loose, but i felt a bit drained or lacking in energy so i tried to preserve myself(knowing i was riding home after) as much as i could. But boy was it fun! Got back to jaspers wondering how im going to make it home, as my legs were quite strained. I managed to get back on it, and me and Peter rode off towards our homes an resting place for the rest of the day. Peter reminded me my legs were finished with, when he got into a pace of about 40-45km/h and for some reason i slowly began to lose his rear wheel. Good ride Peter! Made it home, and for some reason decided to a CVSA ride today...ouch! Im good...recovering as we speak. =D

Permalink Reply by Keith Davies on April 22, 2012 at 21:05 Have a great trip Ramsey, you will be back before you know it. enjoy.
As always a great ride, good company, more newbies and everyone helping out in someway shape or form. All seem to be doing personal bests, as we get fitter and looking for more new challenges.
Do we now start testing ourselves by moving onto the next level, more hills rather than undulating, adding extra km's to the rides. as it seemed a lot of the regular riders are cruising up the "BEGINNERS" climbs and need to step up.
As the King said "C'mon Everbody" lets give it a go.
Permalink Reply by Lee Bakes on April 22, 2012 at 22:20 Speak for yourself Mick... Some of us mere mortals still find the rides tough...
Permalink Reply by terry heney on April 22, 2012 at 22:28 Let em cruise up...I for one dont cruise up any hill..If at some stage I do find hill climbs easy then thats my problem. I choose to ride regardless of my fitness level...I choose to ride with a group to have some laffs and enjoyment of other riders company...I am sure there are other organised rides via the Adelaide Cyclist listings to so called TEST out those who are cruising up the Gawler Wheelers Beginners climbs...As the KING said "C'mon Everybody" lets have a go.... I BLOODY WELL AM lmao...
