Ride Summary:
48 riders turned up for the start and it looked as though the weather would not be kind to us. However the rain cleared well before the start of today’s GW ride.
A very special day for the Gawler Wheelers today for several reasons. Firstly AC VIP/Creator Angus (Special K) joined us for his first GW ride, accompanied by his close friend and domestique Simon. Wilson gave a brilliant speech to welcome Angus and to present him with a Gawler Wheelers jersey to mark the special occasion. It was a pleasure having you there Angus and Simon!
An international VIP from Sheffield UK who is in SA for a couple of weeks also attended the Gawler Wheelers ride today. Great to meet you Robbie, trust that you enjoyed the experience. Wattsy thanks for giving Robbie a lift from town. We also had our GW youngest ever newbie rider join us today . Fabian is 15 years old and he rode like a champion…definitely TDF potential!
Many people are really dedicated to the Gawler Wheelers and no more so than Craig who is getting married to Jodie today but still rode with us this morning…definitely has his priorities right!! We presented Craig with a card and the mandatory marriage rules that he must adhere to! Congratulations Craig and Jodie! Hope you have enough energy left for the celebrations tonight mate!!
Nice to see so many newbies join us today including Jeanette Angus, Simon, Tom, Roger, Tim, Matt and Fabian. Welcome to you all.
The ride itself was also eventful. We had a few of mechanical issues to deal with and a couple of punctures. Unfortunately on the leg home there was a crash and Shane suffered a broken collar bone that required a trip to hospital. He is being operated on today and we all hope that he has a very speedy recovery.
Back at Jaspers the big crowd basked in the morning sun…. and the conversations, laughter and celebrations lasted long into the glorious morning.
NEXT WEEK: Gawler Wheelers will hold two concurrent rides. A hill ride and a shorter beginners hill ride. Full details will be posted on AC Events tomorrow. You are invited to attend....newbies are very welcome. Today’s photo gallery follows:

Permalink Reply by Andrew on October 8, 2011 at 16:15 As usual an enjoyable ride with the Wheelers. It was great to be able to ride with Gus, especially after missing out on H'eroica. It was also great to be able to meet Robbie from Sheffield and get him up to the Wheelers (although the weather did look a bit iffy to start with). What topped it off was being able to catch up with Tim. For those who don't know, Tim and I have known each other in our first careers (hospitality) many years ago and even shared a place for a couple of years. As can happen, life gets in the way and we lost touch. To be able to get back in touch and go for a spin together was pretty cool and another reason why I appreciate this particular online community.
Gotta feel for you Shane, that break must be caning you silly. I hope you have got some good pain killers since it's going to be a couple of days until you get some assistance. Did anyone get the lady's name and address who took you to hospital? It just goes to show that there are some top people around, it shouldn't go unrewarded.
Lastly, I got to ride with a young man by the name of Fabian. It was great to see a kid with some drive to participate and he was ably assisted by Liz. He was able to push through a tough few km's towards the end very well. Great to see.
Until my next time up Norf!

Permalink Reply by colin ware-lane on October 8, 2011 at 16:19 hope you recover well shane,i have been where you are and mine came good.i didnt need an op .
@Juddy, hope all goes well with the collarbone and see you back soon. Still can get down to Jaspers for coffee and some pampering from the girls.
Missed the first section today as escorted broken bike and rider (Jeanette) back to Jaspers. Rode the opposite way to Wasleys to meet up, nearly got there first, seems the TEC aren't suppose to get ahead of the lead riders. Good to see Special K out on the ride, most of our success has come from his drive on the AC site. Just short of the 50 riders today, had GS5 not been on tomorrow, we would have acheived it.
Until next week
Permalink Reply by colin ware-lane on October 8, 2011 at 16:29 so how did the crash happen on such a well organised ride.??
Permalink Reply by Stephen Battye on October 8, 2011 at 16:42 I think someone missed a gear and suddenly slowed and that forced several people to take evasive action and unfortunately Shane went down. Hope you have a speedy recovery mate.
Apart from the crash, it was a sensational ride today, and it was great being able to smash that section between Freeling and Wasleys with some of the boys.
Permalink Reply by Matt Brennan on October 8, 2011 at 18:11 I must admit as I hit the Gawler offramp and had my wipers on the highest speed possible I was looking through the darkness for this 'magic weather' Frank had updated his status to, and Wilson promised not 48 hours before.
However by the time the crowds were turning up the rain had stopped and the clouds were starting to clear.
It was good to see some familiar faces, and lots of new ones.
The ride itself was very enjoyable - a great change of scenery and just a few 'undulations' to keep the legs working.
A great bunch of people and a very well organised ride.
Strava even gave me some crown thingie so that just added to the enjoyment!
The Breakfast didn't quite match those down south ....an 8/10 but the ride itself a sound 10/10.
I look forward to the next chance I get to head North!
ps. I didnt get to meet Shane - but I hope the recovery goes well
Ahhh, so it does rain up there. Ab fab down south today. So maybe Gawler is that far :-)
Wattsy, the Lord of the Muddies has always been a bit of a drip!
Permalink Reply by Gus K on October 8, 2011 at 18:15 Great morning out. Thanks for being so welcoming and for the jersey. I will be sure to wear it again when I ride with you all. It was great to catch up with old friends and new.
While accidents happen it was handled very well by the organisers who I must make special mention of do a great job making everyone aware of the expectations of the ride and more so sacrifice their own commitment free non stop quick ride to help, watch, guide and rescue all of the riders.
Chapeau to all and I hope the c'bone knits fast Shane and Craig had some cycling escape clauses in his nuptials.
Catch you all again.
