Watch out for Adam

Had an interesting day yesterday. Started out lunching at The Stirling Pub with some Geologist buddies and as is always the case lunch turned into dinner into an all day session.

About 5.30 I glanced outside the pub and noticed a bloke with a touring bike asking someone for directions. I popped outside and the guy turned out to be hopelessly lost having just come off the freeway from Murray Bridge. Yep he'd ridden all the way from Murray Bridge to Stirling on the freeway but didnt quite make it any further courtesy of the local constabulary who booked him and presented him with a  $108 fine. 

Anyway Adam is the guys name and he's ridden all the way from Woollangong to Adelaide. He crashed at my house last night and tomorrow he's heading back to Wollangong via The Barossa so look out for him on the road...he's on a very heavily laden Masi(?) converted fixed wheeler. Hes got a huge yellow bag sitting on the carrier of the bike.

A story of how a judge treated two female foreign visitors more kindly than the police treated Adam. Almost too scared to post this because it contains the word helmet with potential hijack.
Their appeal, although accepted, had flaws like riding on footpath and there is a wide-brimmed hat designed to be worn over a bike helmet.

Two young women visiting from overseas have successfully appealed against their convictions for riding a bicycle without a helmet in Adelaide . . . In a written submission asking for the fine to be waived, Oxana said: “I have been riding bicycle, without wearing a bicycle helmet because: I have not known that it’s absolutely necessary; I prefer to wear a hat which can protect me from solar radiation; I ride the bicycle like a pedestrian, not a motorist – only on foot paths.
. . . Justice Gray set aside their convictions because they acknowledged they had breached the law and then took immediate steps to buy helmets. “Having regard to their youth and good character, I consider it appropriate to set aside the convictions.” . . .

So as soon as they became aware they needed a helmet they got one.

This seems a different scenario to a cyclist that rides past a large sign that says no cyclists on freeway.

I would think that if Adam is not happy with the fine he would be able to go to court and state his case.

Would he be succesful in getting the fine waved?

I have no idea.

Don't know Don. I noticed the address field on the ticket had been filled in with the letters "NFPA" so I dont know how  easy its going to be for the authorities to pursue the matter. I never actually learned Adams surname and have no idea what his address is........I was too drunk last night to be concerned about such matters.

Martin, not worth the effort for Adam who is on the road. The female 'tourists' were in Adelaide in September, February and it seems May.

Is it just my imagination or did you say he was on a hipstermobile? That's a sure fair effort, I'm considering doing that in New Zealand later this year.

He was riding a Masi. Metal frame bike which used to be a fixey but Adam had converted it to a geared bike with Shimano XT gear.

Forgot to mention one of his pedals was about ready to fall off so I gave him a spare set I had in my workshop. The toe straps he was riding with looked pretty knackered as well. Was a bit of a contrast seeing his battered old workhorse next to my Bianchi.

The police were not friendly to a tourist when opting for a fine rather than a caution. You said Adam got a good deal with free food and a bed for the night. Then maps. Now you add some pedals. So at least he knows some SA people are welcoming towards tourists.

We werent that noisy...although at one stage Adam got into a lively debate with a young lady sitting by the fire.

I hope you didn't witness my departure from the pub about 11pm.....got my foot stuck against one of those big boofy cube sofas and a table. Adam had to help me get my foot unstuck.

Pub is a 5 minute downhill walk (stumble) from my house :)
