I used to wear jocks under my padded lycra bike shorts so that the shorts didn't need washing after every ride.  Then the bike shop told me that lycra shorts were designed to be worn next to the body so now I don't wear jocks and the shorts get washed after every ride.

However, one of my co-riders recently told his new style jocks weren't as comfortable under his bike shorts as his previous style.  He was aghast when I told him I don't wear any jocks when riding.

What do others do?

commando - period !

I'm not part of the lycra set (yet) but please, for the love of all things occular, PLEASE wear knicks that aren't worn down to see-through on the butt.  I see far to much riders-crack on my drive to work. (We want drivers to be nice to us remember!)

:-D

That said, I've never expected to wear knickers under knicks...  And I'm not sure my ~5km commute would warrant knicks for the ride.

But Juz, if you try the knicks, maybe, you'll be tempted to ride further.
I'm willing to be talked into it Clive; I'd definitely like to ride further. I bought my bike when I first moved to Adl because I wanted to make the most of the cycling culture here, perhaps the Lycra, chamois & commando combination is the next step for me. :-) It's all a bit 'chicken & egg' at the moment though; will I ride more in Lycra or do I need to be riding more before buying Lycra? :-P I also ride a flat bar hybrid so feel a bit of a pretentious joke contemplating Lycra. Perhaps that recent nude ride should have been my starting point! Haha! :-)
Autumn in Adelaide is definately a good time to start extending and increasing your cycling Juz, fine days mostly without too much hot weather and I ride a flat bar, just under 300km last weekend which is not unusual for me nowadays though I really only started riding that much about 12 months ago.
Interesting article in the current edition of Bicycling Australia mag. One of the writers had an article about what not and what to wear. His final comment was about driving somewhere with this missus and coming across a bloke riding his bike who was wearing his knicks inside out - the RED chamois was on the outside - GOLD!!!
I always wear jocks, don't care what the bike shops or experts say. Do what's comfortable for you.
one of the main reasons against underwear is the hygiene. The Chamois is treated to prevent bacterial growth and remove sweat. 99% of underwear isn't up to those same standards. Another important reason is to prevent that chafing action that underwear can bring with close contact movement.

Hey you guys got me paranoid, i was in the changerooms trying to look in the mirror to see if my Skins Lycra Knicks were see thru before i went on my lunchtime ride, it was a sight to see (NOT) glad no one walked in!Pheew1

Oh yeah commando is the go!

Commando all the way

I had a work colleague that didn't appreciate cyclists and was embarrassed to see me in my lycra. You should have seen the look on her face when I told her I don't wear anything underneath. She was thinking about the hundreds she had seen in the hills where she lived.
