For some inexplicable reason I have signed up for the AGF Grand Fondo in September and I am trying to understand the the colour rating of the 9 climbs on the event. They are variously rated red/green/blue, but there does not to be a lot of consistency to the ratings. I am pretty new to this gig and would appreciate an explanation.

Looks like the steepest gradient is around 7-8%, along Skenes Creek Rd for about 10kms. head for the freeway or Greenhill Rd for a practice ride.

Let me see if I can answer your question.

  • Bicycle Victoria run a really good event
  • The course is a fully closed road
  • 40km along the Great Ocean Road
  • Life without challenges is just not worth living

The colours on the profile indicate the distance that the average gradient of the climb.

I am also doing the ride with a bunch of mates from Canberra and am really looking forward to the challenge.

James can you explain again. The distance (length) of the climb is shown along the bottom of the profile and the gradient is a shade of grey as depicted in the bar. I think Mike is querying what the numbers 1-9 in red, green, and blue mean. Now that he has pointed it out I have the same question.

OOOps just realised this question is almost 12 months old. Did anybody actually answer it.

The profile on C2M is a bit misleading as you are coming from a different direction.

Based on my details from last year you can break the climb up into to distinct parts

Bottom to KOM

9.06km at a average of 5.1%

There are a few small kicks, bit like going up the Old Freeway, but nothing that will really kill the legs.

KOM onwards

7.3 km with a average of 0.7% but its made up of lots of rolling stuff

Thanks James but I am not sure I have framed the question correctly. On the profile itself for this years ride on the AGF site at Cape Patton Lookout there is the number 1 in a red circle. Past Skenes Creek North and then between Devils Elbow and Barramunga are the numbers 2 and 3 in red circles. Then past Barramunga is the number 4 in a green circle. These numbers all seem to coincide with a climb albeit some very small and the numbering continues up to 9 at Benwerrin in a blue circle. Do the numbers 1-9 in varying coloured circles mean anything? They do not show up on the plan just the profile. It might be obvious but I don't get it.

Maybe they're the numbers of the climbs? I think there are 9 hills/ decent climbs? Think the colour coding is the 'difficulty' of that climb?

Anyone doing it this year?

Well I am.

A company called Cycling Profiles do the maping for this event, the TDU and a whole bunch of other races.

Those numbers corospond to their profile maps

Brilliant James thanks. It makes sense now red up green down blue up then down. I note the numbers are included on the map at this link.

Cheers.

I am glad I could help.

Did not know that they were different colours, one of the downfalls of being colour blind.

Me Too Red/Blue confused. I just read it in Mike's original post and got one of my team at work to identify them for me.
