Ride Summary

The Gawler Wheelers weekend started with our first ever Track Night at the Super-Drome on Friday night. For many of the 28 GW members there this was their first exposure to track cycling. They were joined by an equal number of family and friends that helped make it a real family night.

On arrival most were out of their comfort zone thinking “can I do it” and “what bike do I choose”. However there were plenty providing encouragement & guidance…. and soon everyone was truly into it. The first hour was spent getting used to the bikes and riding on the track. Eddie from the Super-Drome ran the night for us and was capably assisted by GW members & seasoned tracker cyclists Tony & his brother JB.

During the second part of the night the riders participated in organised events such as the “Whistle Sprint”, and the “Team Pursuit”. The last event was the individual “Flying 200” ie only one cyclist on the track doing a 3 lap warm up and then going flat out for the last timed 200 metres. Wilson will post all the times on the GW page later but I can tell you that the best 3 times went to Tony, Craig and JB.

The night was a huge success however I will let others comment more about the GW Track Night experience. A very special thanks to Wilson Devo who put a lot of work into organising the night. We are thinking about holding these Track Nights regularly if the demand is there?…let us know your thoughts by replying to this post...(all AC members are welcome at GW events).

Well that was last night! A few hours later on Saturday morning 32 riders arrived at Jaspers for the normal group ride. Today we rode a shorter beginner’s hill route. It was a most pleasant relaxed ride and it was great to finish earlier than normal and spend more time chatting back at Jaspers. The route gave riders some hill climbing experience and also the thrill of the long Kentish Road decent where speeds exceeded 60 kph…(and where yours truly nearly lost it at that speed as I hit some gravel on the road.)

A special welcome to newbie (and Gully Grinders member) Scott who joined us today.  A special mention also re long time GW member Warren Porteous who rode in the Norwood Cycling Club criteriums at Whitmore Square last weekend and took out a 1st in E grade and 1st in the preme sprint. Well done Warren! Finally we would like to recognise riders such as Keith and Carmen who rode at the track last night, then the group ride today and tomorrow will be doing the Grand Slam ride….that’s cycling PASSION!

NEXT WEEK: Due to unprecedented overwhelming demand we are riding back through the beautiful Barossa Valley, up to the Warren Reservoir and back by the super smooth Balmoral Road. Details will be posted on AC Events soon. All AC members, including YOU, are most welcome to attend. Today’s photo gallery follows:

Track Night: The trick is to look as though you know what you are doing!

Track Night: Pete..."hmmm...yep I might take this bike"

Track Night: Carmen & Fabian chose their bikes then it was time to get the pedals on and fine tune the bike fit

Track Night: Eddie signing everyone up

Track Night: Eddie explaining what the Team Pursuit entails

Track Night: Easy peasy....got the hang of it already

Waiting for our turn for the Flying 200 (photo by CLP)

TODAY'S COMPETITION: What was Juz doing here just prior to taking to the track? The person with funniest answer will get a very special prize from Juz....hmmmm!

Saturday: Lee had his bike stolen yesterday but Richard lent him this bike so that he could ride today. Thank you Richard.

Ramsay (left) had just told us that he had not been on the bike for 3 weeks and would find the group ride tough. We said .."Ramsay, care factor = nil!"

On a beautiful morning we regroup prior to Curtis Road

Keith and Ramsay (left).....he did well!

Terry at the top of Yorketown Road after a long hill climb. (You shouldn't have had that smoke before the ride Terry!)

Dave...on the other hand was doing it easy!

You have to regoup at the gorgeous One Tree Hill & soak it in

One Tree Hill, an ideal place to take a moment and quietly reflect on the sacrifices people have made for this great country.

Chris at One Tree Hill...."yes ...life is too good in Australia"

We love getting back to Jaspers where these lovely GW Groupies usually await us.

Newbie Scott rates his first Gawler Wheelers Experience...10/10!

Finally some video of the Track Night courtesy of Peter Berry.

under pete robert's bum!

Loving the comments about Frank's photo of me at the beginning of track night (and as Keith so astutely observed, the knicks were still black at that stage so the photo was definitely taken before my 'stunt')!!  Keep the comments coming, I've got a few more days of laughing at my own expense before I choose the winning answer :-)

As for my rides this weekend, I had a great night on Friday, albeit cut far shorter than I wished after my 'stunt' and subsequent change of pants.  By the time I had collected myself again and felt like I could brave the bike and track again, the group sprints were starting up and I didn't have any confidence to get going in that capacity, so I decided to enjoy watching you all - and wow it was fantastic to see everyone spinning around the track.  I especially loved watching (and keeping the list of everyone's times for) the 200m sprints; the determination on everyone's face and the sense of thrill as you all crossed the finish line was something to behold. Caroline and CLP have both posted spectacular photos of the night; lots of determined faces !

After a busy week with, at best, swear-worthy sleep, topped off by the adrenalin and late night of track night on Friday and again, almost no sleep, I rocked up to Jaspers on Saturday morning not quite remembering how I got there. I was tired beyond all sensibility so I hopped on my bike and started pedalling. I knew what Yorkstown Rd held and figured my favourite hill-climbing posture of lying flat across the top tube would allow me to essentially lie down, prop my head up on the stem and pretend I was still awake. Again, thanks to Chris for giving me his wheel and keeping me going up that one.

I didn't read the route map and expected that we were doing Route 28, which includes Cornishmans Hill Rd.  I remember that road from last time and really didn't feel up to it yesterday, but was anticiapting it with every pedal stroke and was thoroughly confused when, before I knew it, we were travelling down Kentish Rd back to Gawler and I hadn't felt the pain of Cornishmans Hill.  For a moment, I genuinely questioned whether we had ridden it and I was so tired it hadn't registered (all pain was pain yeterday, no pedal stroke was less painful than the last, whether on an incline or decline) which just added to my confusion.  Either way, I was on my bike, with fabulous people so it was a great morning.

I'm going to have to get my sleep back in order though - this is getting silly. :-)

Lee, I'm glad to hear you're sticking to riding.  It's great to have you out with us on Saturdays and I'm sure there will be offers of loaner road bikes for you whenever you want to head out with us if the insurance hasn't come through yet  :-)

Had a lot of fun at the track night. Thanks to Wilson for organising it - look forward to the next encounter. Also, a big thank you to CLP & Caroline for all the pics!

Saturdays ride was a great start to my weekend, I am disapointed that I could not make the track night, what made it worse though was a not so nice meal at the clovey!

@frank some mad skills displayed while doing some dirt track riding!!!

Hoping to be there this saturday, have a memorial to go to at goolwa!

Friday night was a great start to the weekend, i definently had alot of fun...after i wriggled out of the nervous tension, and boy would i do it again!! Sure, my time sucks and i hope to use that as leverage next time round...as a kind of motivation to not be so CHICKEN next time and get DOWN(!!) more....anyway enough of that competitive nature of mine.  I had never tried a bicycle before that seemed to almost have mind of its own in comparison to what i was used to..ie. gears and brakes and freewheeling but it didnt stop me nor did stop others who had never ridden one of these "Fixies" before, and it was a fun challenge. Boy is it demanding on the lungs and dries the mouth out, no wonder Track Cyclists become possible TDF winners not to mention gold medals galore. Dont get me started on the Cadence....sheeesh!

OK Juz....I think in that picture, that you were practicing and visualising aerodynamic positions but all of a sudden you fell into a daze and forgot what you were doing in the first place, because of your lack of sleep lately and sat there wondering...hmmm what was i doing again?

Had good fun also on Sunday up at woodside riding with Craig and Peter just to name a few, and saw Barry at the start...howd you go Barry? I only did one loop and felt a bit ashamed for not feeling quite 100% on the day, so i rode back home via nortons to be uplifted again by watching the Rendition series Norton TT and im sure you all know...theres a newly crowned king in town.....Damien Howson, King of the Mountain...ok maybe just a hill, but one of Adelaide most known cycling hills. 11.29.42 from bottom to top....GASP! We got another Adelaide champ rising!!

Also...smoking is bad mmmmmmkay! Just stating a fact, not telling ya how to run ya life. =D

lol, love the Mr Mackey ref!

TRACK NIGHT COMMENT - "THE FLYING 200"

The flying 200m time trial (so-called because riders have a flying start, as opposed to the standing start in the kilo/500m) is rarely held on its own. It is more commonly used as the qualifying event for the sprint competition, or as part of an Omnium competition. Velodromes have a line painted across the track at 200m before the finish line, for this purpose. Therefore, the size the track will determine where the 200-meter line is (for 250m tracks, it is about two-thirds of the way through the first bend; for 200-meter tracks, it is the finish line; for 400-meter tracks, it is the start line in the back straight). The clock will start as they cross this line and stop when they reach the finish line.

Depending on the size of the track, riders have between one and three laps to build up speed before the clock starts. They will ride around the very top of the track as they near the start line, then drop down to the bottom to gain as much speed as possible from rolling down the steep inclined banking. The Flying 200m is ridden on a standard track bike (drop handlebars, spoked front wheel) when it is part of the Sprint competition, and often during the Omnium as well so riders need have only one bike.

A fast time at elite level is just above 10 seconds for men, 12 seconds for women. The men's record of 9.572 seconds was set by Kévin Sireau in Moscow, Russia on May 30, 2009.

I forgot.......Thankyou so very much to Wilson for organising such a sweet event, you know you do us GWs so proud! And of course Frank, The man....the media man, who was there to give us encouragment and yell out "GET DOWN" when doing the flying 200m which made it feel like the olympics or something- Cheers Frank for everything. Also Thankyou to Caroline and CLP for there amazing Photography work and Mum also would like to say thanks for having some more pictures of me looking silly on a bike! Thanks to Pete Berry for being there and doing a great job to help out Eddie.

JB and his brother might not seem like spring chickens.....but youd be wrong to think so, what a great night and thankyou to you fellas for inciting Wilson to this decision and showing us all the way. Eddie was someone i listened to throroughly and he was a really nice guy who actually loved his job(who wouldnt...) and if it wasnt for him we would of been a bit lost, so thanks to Eddie. A last show of gratitiude to everyone who turned up be it non-rider or rider, and of course cheers Nick and Brett for the Bike relaying/borrowing. PS cheers frank also for taking my bribe and changing my Flying 200m to "13.55" LOL only joking guys.

Looks like you all had a $#!t load of fun. Very disappointed to miss track night this time around; would loved to have had a go at that flying 200. Didn't ride at all last week except for Monday and and feeling pretty right so raring to go now and looking forward to getting back on track so to speak. Did some swimming to help the back out and my times actually surprised me considering. Maybe I'll start running again too, and get back into that crazy sport they call triathlon. LOL

See ya Sat'd

Tight tyres everyone. ;)

Im sure you wouldve not only loved the flying 200...but demoloshed it.

Good to have ya back out and on the road again(so you can pudh the train again..LOL) and i hope to seeyou then!

Triatholon....ooo thats a tough sport. Even Lance Armstrong can agree to that.
