Ride Summary

The Gawler Wheelers weekend started with our first ever Track Night at the Super-Drome on Friday night. For many of the 28 GW members there this was their first exposure to track cycling. They were joined by an equal number of family and friends that helped make it a real family night.

On arrival most were out of their comfort zone thinking “can I do it” and “what bike do I choose”. However there were plenty providing encouragement & guidance…. and soon everyone was truly into it. The first hour was spent getting used to the bikes and riding on the track. Eddie from the Super-Drome ran the night for us and was capably assisted by GW members & seasoned tracker cyclists Tony & his brother JB.

During the second part of the night the riders participated in organised events such as the “Whistle Sprint”, and the “Team Pursuit”. The last event was the individual “Flying 200” ie only one cyclist on the track doing a 3 lap warm up and then going flat out for the last timed 200 metres. Wilson will post all the times on the GW page later but I can tell you that the best 3 times went to Tony, Craig and JB.

The night was a huge success however I will let others comment more about the GW Track Night experience. A very special thanks to Wilson Devo who put a lot of work into organising the night. We are thinking about holding these Track Nights regularly if the demand is there?…let us know your thoughts by replying to this post...(all AC members are welcome at GW events).

Well that was last night! A few hours later on Saturday morning 32 riders arrived at Jaspers for the normal group ride. Today we rode a shorter beginner’s hill route. It was a most pleasant relaxed ride and it was great to finish earlier than normal and spend more time chatting back at Jaspers. The route gave riders some hill climbing experience and also the thrill of the long Kentish Road decent where speeds exceeded 60 kph…(and where yours truly nearly lost it at that speed as I hit some gravel on the road.)

A special welcome to newbie (and Gully Grinders member) Scott who joined us today.  A special mention also re long time GW member Warren Porteous who rode in the Norwood Cycling Club criteriums at Whitmore Square last weekend and took out a 1st in E grade and 1st in the preme sprint. Well done Warren! Finally we would like to recognise riders such as Keith and Carmen who rode at the track last night, then the group ride today and tomorrow will be doing the Grand Slam ride….that’s cycling PASSION!

NEXT WEEK: Due to unprecedented overwhelming demand we are riding back through the beautiful Barossa Valley, up to the Warren Reservoir and back by the super smooth Balmoral Road. Details will be posted on AC Events soon. All AC members, including YOU, are most welcome to attend. Today’s photo gallery follows:

Track Night: The trick is to look as though you know what you are doing!

Track Night: Pete..."hmmm...yep I might take this bike"

TODAY'S COMPETITION: What was Juz doing here just prior to taking to the track? The person with funniest answer will get a very special prize from Juz....hmmmm!

Saturday: Lee had his bike stolen yesterday but Richard lent him this bike so that he could ride today. Thank you Richard.

Ramsay (left) had just told us that he had not been on the bike for 3 weeks and would find the group ride tough. We said .."Ramsay, care factor = nil!"

On a beautiful morning we regroup prior to Curtis Road

Keith and Ramsay (left).....he did well!

Terry at the top of Yorketown Road after a long hill climb. (You shouldn't have had that smoke before the ride Terry!)

Dave...on the other hand was doing it easy!

You have to regoup at the gorgeous One Tree Hill & soak it in

One Tree Hill, an ideal place to take a moment and quietly reflect on the sacrifices people have made for this great country.

Chris at One Tree Hill...."yes ...life is too good in Australia"

We love getting back to Jaspers where these lovely GW Groupies usually await us.

Newbie Scott rates his first Gawler Wheelers Experience...10/10!

Finally some video of the Track Night courtesy of Peter Berry.

Great pics Caroline. Thanks!

From the lowest of lows to the highest of highs...

After having my bike stolen on Friday while I was at work I was feeling a bit unhappy.  I thought about just giving up the whole cycling thing.

After speaking to Richard, Juz, Terry and Frank I have deicded that I will continue cycling.  I plan to ride my mountain bike until my house and contents insurance claim is settled.  I may not received the full price to cover the bike, but if need be when I get a replacement digital camera and laptop, I will buy cheaper items so that I have more money to spend on my bike.

I would like to thank everyone for their well wishes.  I would especially like to thank Richard for letting me borrow his bike and pushing me to ride up Yorktown Rd.  I was struggling a fair bit but felt amazing after having completed the ride.  I think this is one of the main reasons that I decided to continue cycling.

I would also like to thank Terry for his constant support, especially since my bike has been stolen.

I would also like to thank Frank, Mark and Juz who all said things privately to me that convinced me that I must keep going.

I managed to borrow a friend's computer to write this post. I might not be able to attend the GW rides for a few weeks, but I plan on coming back stronger than ever!

At the moment its not goodbye, its see ya later!

Thanks everyone for your support.

Never give up Lee :o)

Lee...

No need to thank me mate..You helped me get up and running so only fair I help you get back and running Lee...We riding buddies pal...Mountain bike or bust we gunna keep riding together..You love riding Lee so no use stopping something you love...To see you finish Saturdays ride and NOT give up regardless of your mind set of the past 12hr before that day inspires me to do more Lee...So when your fully up and running with a NEWER better bike I GUNNA SMASH YOU ON THE ROADS LMAO...NOT...see you during the week Lee...chin up mate..past is the past as we have discussed...cant change it....

On another note...

Saturdays ride certainly tested my hill climbing ability...had none lmfao.... but I got through it but no way was I going to get off my bike up those hills...not the quickest but happy enough to survive... thanks to all for support, patience and laughter....

Before the ride I ate an energy bar...not long after I didnt feel 100% but kept going. When I arrived home I was NOT feeling all well at all...Said hi to the toilet bowl a few times and was totally stuffed...this went on for most of the rest of the day...Even this morning I didnt feel quite right...I am sure the energy bar was to blaim for how I was feeling....Asked Lee how he felt as he had same bar.. He also wasnt feeling great either but not to the extent that I had been... ANy one else had similar illness from and energy bar ??/

Frank.

Wasnt the smoke that made me look like I was spent (although that doesnt help I KNOW) in that photo..it was and still is because I am suffering from food poisoning after eating half an energy bar 30mins before we took off from Jaspers...confirmed by my doctor this morning....

Great photos of the track night everybody! It was a fun night (I was a bit worried when I lost my bike!) Thanks for finding it for me Pete!!

@ Lorraine - I left before you found it, glad you located it, where was it ?
