I was just wondering has anyone done the Grand Fondo last year ? Instead of bus-ing it back a friend and I were going to ride back from Apollo Bay to Lorne . Are we insane?. I would imagine the flow of traffic would increase significantly. What is the state of the roads around that area? Thanks for any input thats hepful .
I last drove this road 30 years a go it is very narrow and cut into a cliff.
I can you return via a different route?
Lorne to Apollo Bay and back is two thirds the full ride why not go the whole way?
There is no way I would ride back. I was there last year and drove back from Apollo Bay after the road re-opened. The traffic in both directions was very heavy and the return trip is on the 'inside' lane of the road (i.e. on the cut away side and not the seaside). There is no verge most of the way and not enough room for both a bicycle and a car/bus/caravan/truck etc etc in the lane. There was also a lot of very aggressive driving from hoons in both cars and motor bikes
Give it a miss unless it is possible to get back to Lorne before the road re-opens. They should have enough info on the web site to allow you to calculate this
Thanks Michael . Great input . Jeremy my cycling buddy is on chemo so we are caculating what she is able to do ... The heart is saying go the full distance but the body is saying other things ;-)
Well good on you both for tackling it in the first place. Sounds like it is a bit dodgy attempting to ride back along the Ocean Road according to Mike and I guess as it is closed operating in only the one direction you probably would not be allowed to turn around and ride back until the road is reopened to two way traffic. There does not appear to be much of an alternative route back either. I don't think you are insane for contemplating riding back either.
Thanks everyone... for have worked out it is a bit risky on the way back and we are opting for the bus .
Just to add - the Great Ocean Road is completely closed for a specified period (which I could not find on the website)
Roads are closed as follows
Lorne to Skenes Creek: 7am - 11am (Great Ocean Road)
Skenes Creek to Forrest: 8am - 12.30pm
Forrest to Birregurra-Deans Marsh Rd: 9am - 1.30pm
Birregurra-Deans Marsh Rd to Deans Marsh: 10am - 2pm
Deans Marsh to Lorne: 9.30am - 3pm
Thanks guys .. A mountain of info that has been very helpful ... Gotta love Adelaide Cyclists
