The Invisible Bicycle Helmet | Fredrik Gertten from Focus Forward Films on Vimeo.

Essentially a great little invention from two very clever designers. Great potential for commuter cycling. Please do'nt turn this into a pro or anti helmet thread. Just enjoy a nice piece of film and a clever idea!

The still pictures have been around for a while but I've never seen the video.

Wow very cool I like the idea of it :-)

2010 phoned and they want their breaking news back...

Here are some better videos of it in action:-

If it came with an AS/NZS 2063 sticker I'd get one - unfortunately it isn't legal here. If it was legal, hopefully all those people who come onto forums with posts about how they saw some stupid idiot riding without a helmet would have to be a bit more certain of their sanctimony before airing it - nah wouldn't happen.

Wonder why this video is being trotted out in lots of bicycle forums? Maybe the makers are using some of their venture capital on an astroturfing campaign to try and get some sales - any sales.

The short video I posted is part of the Focus Forward short film competition, hence it popping up around the web at the moment,

I am a product designer by trade, and very aware a great idea and execution is never a guarantee of success. Surely this assists in getting some more exposure.

Does anyone know how dangerous having a canister of compressed air so close to you neck is ?  (Assuming that's how it works.)

Michael

Airbags dont use compressed air, they use a focused explosive device. Hopefully its pointing the right way :)

A shaped charge.......like they use for perforating through steel casing in oil wells??

It is my understanding that air bags use a propellant that ignites and generates a gas (usually nitrogen)  that fills the bag. Not quite the same as a focused explosive device.

It should also scare the bejesus out of a magpie.

Well maybe not an "explosive" as such, but it is classified as an explosive device. We couldn't airfreight them.

Umm, were we supposed to be watching the sub-titles, the pretty ladies or the fixed gear/ss bicycles?

Neat idea and one that gets around a lot of problems with the current helmets (limited coverage, no side coverage, neck support). For heavy sweaters like me though, a thick collar would probably prove too hot for practical use, but it's a step forward from what we have now.

Why not take the inflatable helmet idea one step further??

Maybe a bit like the Segway- An invention looking for a purpose? Got no problems with my $120 Limar 777.
