Ride Summary

On a morning made in heaven 54 riders converged on Gawler for the start of today’s GW rides. Amongst the crowd were newbies Scott, Terry, Andrew and Neil (who came all the way from Townsville). Welcome to the Gawler Wheelers family! Terry and Andrew arrived very early as they were super keen as this was their first ever group ride …(both rode magnificently).
40 of the riders elected to do the 56km flat ride to Two Wells and Virginia. We were honoured to have Dale and John join us on the ride. They would normally do the hills ride but decided to accompany the flat group for a change. They ride at a fast speed and as a result the whole group was inspired to ride faster than normal and that led to many average speed PBs today.
When we arrived at Two Wells we regrouped and it was there that Barry had us rolling in laughter. First he was telling us about how he took a wrong turn on the RLC and got lost again! Then he told us that he could not find his Kindle eReader last week and looked for it everywhere. Some days later he found the remnants of it in the corner of his backyard….yes…. his dog ate the Kindle! Amazingly he got a free replacement under the warranty?? I will let him expand on both tales later!
14 riders undertook the extreme hills ride….extreme because it’s just hill after hill, includes a dirt stretch and several very perilous descents. All was going well until one of those dangerous descents when Gundi could not break in time at the bottom and went off his bike sliding into the bushes across the road. He was fairly shaken and sustained various cuts and grazes but thankfully no major injuries. His mate Tony accompanied Gundi back home...thanks Tony
We called Gundi after the ride and whilst he seemed ok he was going to go to the hospital for a precautionary check-up. Hope you are ok Gundi?…now you know why we specifically mention that descent during the ride safety brief!
Finally a special mention regarding GW regulars Reidy and Matthew (The Cadence Man) who are both doing the 900km RIDE4REPAT in a few weeks and are seeking support for their fundraising. Check out Reidy’s Blog for all the details and how you can donate to this very worthy cause >> http://cyclingaj.wordpress.com/2012/02/03/ride4repat/

Permalink Reply by terry heney on February 11, 2012 at 17:12 What can I say apart from .. I DID IT!!!!!!...fantastic people to be a part of today...all full of positive actions and helpful suggestions and encouragement. Thanks to you all.
Personally the leg to Two Wells I struggled with. I shouldnt have but damn my butt just gave up on me LOL...I wasnt sure how the hell it would hold up for the rest of the journey so I plugged on. My stamina at Two Wells felt pretty good as it should be after just 20k.
Ride to Virginia was when I began to really feel refreshed and when we stopped there for a 5 min break I felt the next leg to home would be when I would start to push a little harder. I really couldn't believe how well I felt considering the longest distance I had ridden before today was only 30k's so I put my head down and just went for it..Saw my buddie Lee Bakes up ahead on the SOB run which gave me more incentive to go harder LMAO...To be honest I never took my eyes off him the whole ride as to where he was situated just incase he needed a helping hand hehehehe. ( yer righto as if ) . Probably would not have done this ride today if it not for Lee's encouragement and training with me for the past 4 weeks...THANKS LEE :)
Arriving at Jaspers I couldn't believe I had made it...Thanks Christene (wife) for support :). Thanks to Gawler Wheelers for fantastic organisation and great friendly atmosphere..
To the guys at Star Cycles.. My bike be there maybe Tuesday to get it's gears serviced LOL....fantastic and helpfull they are...
