TDU - Eastern Suburbs only

With the news that Glenelg and other western councils have missed out on a TDU event, does that mean that the TDU is reserved for the eastern suburbs and country towns.  I understand that there could be some logistical problems but I would have thought a start in Glenelg (?) and going down Military Road, through Port Adelaide and then using Port River Expressway wouldn't have been too difficult to achieve... Just a thought.

But surely if the TDF organisers can work out how to stage the finish on the Champs Elysees every year while still meeting their TV rights commercial agreements and fitting in with the working of a city of 2.2 million people it wouldn't be beyond the bounds of possibility for a stage to finish in the city here in Adelaide?

But why does a stage need to finish in the city? The city already gets the equivalent of a prologue around the east end, and the final stage around North Adelaide, the Tour Village, and stage starts in at least 2 urban areas a year. I have no problem with sharing it around and letting rural areas host finishes and starts and the race routes in between.

It wouldn't be if the TDU was as big as the TDF. 

I'm sure Mike Turtur does all he can to accommodate as many city suburbs as possible and the event is a South Australian event not an Adelaide event so it has to be expected that other places within the state are going to attract starts/finishes.

agreed. The general population in South Australia spend too much time whinging about the road closures that we do have let alone trying to close down part of the Western Suburbs! goodness what an uproar there would be!! Heaven forbid we closed down more roads what with the Clipsal 500, Fringe and TDU.!

In it's infancy there was a finish at the Plaza on North East Road one year. While it was very successful the moaning by the locals went on for months and then they got upset when we (TTG) did not get a start or finish the next year. Actually not sure if it ended up the biggest split in TDU history but there was two distinct groups with probably 20-30 riders about 20  minutes behind. A friend of mine was one of the police escort bikies and they had allsorts of issues with keeping the road closures intact around the course trying to get the derriere (spelling?) end of the peloton to the finish. The other problem with bringing it in through the North East was the number of side road closures they had to make and maintain with a police presence at each one.

if i remember correctly, the finish was ultra close too..   unfortunately the power cut out (or was cut :/ )   as the leaders crossed the line..   so there was no photo finish equipment available to sort out the winner of the stage.

I saw in person a finish at TTP. O'Grady was announced the winner of that stage. Do not recall other info.
