Looks like some early info is out about the TDU Challenge Ride for 2011...

Short at 135 km for the long course but there is a sting in the tail...Checker Hill.  I think it is an 18% climb.  Never done it myself but have heard that is tough.

Looks like there are some other climbs along the way.  Finish is at Strath.

Yes, Checkers is tough - 18% sounds about right. And unlike, say, Corkscrew, you can see the entire climb from the bottom, and it looks like a bloody cliff.
Alright, I'll add this as an event, and see if we can have the biggest CancerVoicesSA team yet. I think there are currently about 140 CVSA members, by December this should grow even larger, so how big a team can we enter?

This also means that January 16 will be Ride Like Crazy!
I'd love to have a crack at something like this, not sure I'm ready yet but there's plenty of time between now and January.
The distance is easy enough, it sounds like the hill might be a bit of a bugger!

You'll be fine Patrick I am sure. Me, with an 18% hill, am thinking motor doping may be the order of the day. Could be a ride for the Felt with the triple on the front!
Count me in for the challenge tour. and a maybe for ride like crazy.
Ride Like Crazy is excellent. This will be it's third year, and will be bigger and better than even last years was, and that was up there as one of the best!
Car.
Parachute!
The front is pretty much one gradient all the way, so you sort of get used to it, the back starts off OK but gets steeper towards the top. Last little bit of the back of Checker, as you turn the last corner before the top is a bugger.. The back side of Checker is, in my opinion, harder than Torrens Hill Rd.. Torrens Hill appears to be steepest at the bottom and gets easier towards the top..

I'd imagine the TDU is doing the front climb of Checker Hill though, that's the one they usually use..
I agree with you entirely, JDL. The 'back' climb of Checkers is a real B... The gradient is more than 9% and is a lot steeper than Corkscrew and most other climbs in Adelaide that I have done and I have done a lot. Still it is all just a challenge. Might have to go out for a Recce as I haven;t done either climb for a few years.
A recce sounds like fun...we could set up an Adelaide Cyclists Group Ride for it - The Ride to Check Out Checkers!
Seriously, I would be interested in doing a loop out to the hill and back.
Can we wait til I have my gears set up or can I borrow a bike please?
