I'm in the process of designing the Official TDU 2013 merchandise. Been doing it a few years. Anywho, thought of designing a 'willunga hill' style tee and a 'past winners' style tee. I try to design gear that suits a broad cycling demographic. I can never be sure im hitting the mark. I'd just like to know what people think and what they'd like to see as part of the overall look.
I thought this years selction was the best so far. I bought the blue tour down under tshirt with v neck. In past years it has been a bit boring/safe. Is that to cater for the masses? I thought his year was a bit better. More options for women would be good, we don't all like to wear pink.
There seems to be 2 types of customers. Those that are non riders and just general enthusiasts of the race itself and love the vibe. Then those that are more in tune with the race itself and are aware of the riders involved, and the racing itself (generally riders themselves). That's about all I've ever been able to glean from the event in a marketing sense. Low risk items are always on the cards, e.g. polo shirts with an event logo to the left chest which may be perceived as boring and safe. The event runs for a week or so the gear has to be spot on otherwise your chance for sales is missed. More options for ladies? That's a good point. The crowds always seem to be fairly well balanced in terms of gender. But that's just my casual observation.
wine glasses will be a hit with the local wineries
how about some decent tdu bidons with past winners and years on them, i for one would use them regularly, also on your polo shirts can you make them so they dont need ironing,
TDU bidons with past winners is a great idea. Generally Polyester cool dry fabric is the 'non ironing' fabric. Typically it's the pique fabric that requires the ironing.
Modern style T-shirts (Check Creux examples)
Key rings with Jerseys of Leader/KOM etc.
Supporter t-shirts/hats with TDU plus the competing teams logo (Think that a few spectators would like to be in a TDU specific Orica-Green Egde t-shirt/Hat)
More good ideas. I'd never checked out Creux before. Pretty cool stuff. Team logos is another good idea. Cheers!
A TDU Cow Bell
Yes please to this would love a cow bell lol they are the best way to cheer the riders :-)
I would definitely buy a Willunga hill T :-)
In case i've missed, how about TDU musettes. Maybe avail for purchase or if you buy a certain number of items you get one free, or in a pack with things like bidons and a cap?
I have always found the guys at stomachofanger.com have some great T-shirts and simple ideas for their T's.
Maybe something to do with Andrea Grieple, a silly idea of gorilla on a bike?
They have a new one commemorating a stage of this years Giro which is pretty good, that would fit with a Willunga hilltop finish, or to be different bringing something to do with the beach side stages, Grape vines through the Barossa???
