Support Adelaide Community Bicycle Workshop – donate timber we can build shelves and storage racks from
Since the workshop opened last August, we had a lot of great donations, of bikes and parts. We recently got a 6 m shipping container, to store donated bikes , parts and spares, & we desperately need to fit it out properly so stuff is neatly stored and it’s easy to find what you want.
The plan: floor-to-ceiling storage shelves down one side; Other side, a hanging rail, to take 20-25 bikes hung from their front wheels, pedals off, handlebars turned sideways. Leaves a wide walk-way for access – easy to see what there is, easy get what you want.
The shelves are designed, to be built of recycled timber or offcuts - and this is where Adelaide Cyclists members come in. Do you have any offcuts , pieces in the garage you could donate for us to recycle?
-For shelf supports: “4 x 2” structural timber (actually more like 70 x 35 mm) , anything 1.5 m or longer.
-for shelves: plank, chipboard, (melamine coated or plain), MDF, thick plywood, even T&G floorboard - strong, solid, at least 60 cm in one dimension, can be cut to 60 cm broad. Doesnt need to be all the same! Salvaged Chipboard / veneer board from wall units or cupboards is fine.
-for bike hanging rail: solid steel or iron bar. Wooden pole, min 30 mm diam would also do. Min length 2 m; total length, 8-10 m.
So: check your garage or shed for offcuts you have left over - those unused pieces, can become a solid part of Adelaide’s cycling scene. Your timber gets recycled – the workshop gets better – and saves money to spend on bike tools for you to use..
If you have some timber to donate - love to hear from you, post here, or contact me via the website, or 0435 02 16 81

More infor -
I have a couple of sheets of formica coated chip board and some timber that can be recycled, I might even be able to get the stuff transported to site but probably not on a weekend day. Is it possible to leave it somewhere one afternoon next week, I am reliant on a relative with dual cab ute to transport the stuff at their convienience.
Given that IKEA are close to the workshop I wonder if a formal approach by BISA might work for donations of damaged shelf units, timber used for packing in shipping containers etc
Now 2 weeks since i put this post up. Thanks to 2-3 very generous offers, looks like we will get the material we need to put wood shelves up. They will be rough & ready, but will do until we can kit the container out properly.
Still some work to do, putting shelves in place, sorting out the collection of spare parts, and salvaging some bikes that are beyond repair.
Volunteers welcome, just come along, starting Saturday, starting 24th.
Would a table ~0.5 x 1.5 meters, melamine top, steel legs, standing height ~1m be of any use to the Community Bike workshop? Work has one to give away, if not claimed within a week it will get tossed in the rubbish. Please let me know if you would like to have it for the workshop.
I didn't see your original post and am wondering whether you got the materials you required.
I work in Klemzig and we have pallets stacked in the yard which can be broken down and used for shelving. The pallets can be taken by the general public at no cost. I can't arrange a delivery but am sure that you would be able to have some pallets if required; just need to arrange collection.
@ Gemma B and Carl. Thanks for your offers (on behalf of Mike). We've now covered our present needs, and have some reserves. Regards.
BJ do you have enough boxes and buckets, I delivered more to Mike a couple of weeks ago.
