Greetings,

in most other forums I'm a member of, new posts/ responses to threads go at the end of the thread and you can quote earlier posts in the thread for reference. This makes it easy to follow replies.

Is there any way in this forum to set up your view that way? In threads, especially the ones over a few pages long, people can reply to any post anywhere and its very very difficult to find them. The only option seems to be a "latest reply" link alongside the thread heading, but that doesn't show any of the ones before that. Anyway, curious to see how others follow threads and if I'm missing something in settings or options perhaps?

cheers

Tim

I've seen both of those functions, but was thinking of something slightly different. For example, if we "Like" the discussion then it comes up in a separate section of the My Page to let us follow it more easily.

I'm not sure that helps with the original question though. Is colour coding an option? A certain colour for a recent reply, fading down as the time passes since posting?

Gus, it is hard trying to please all the people all of the time. Need to know when a balance has been reached and explain to members that you cannot meet every request, which might also conflict with another member's request.

I'll add that I'm just throwing out ideas here. I have no idea what is technically possible and quite like the site the way it is anyway, you do a great job :-)

Is a Poll at all possible on this forum?
At least Gus may be able to gauge an idea of what people may like to see

Kylie, Interestingly yes, there is.

You can go to your page and on the right is a link to My Likes and it displays pretty well but looking at it now it seems a bit of an underdeveloped tool. I'll look into it some more. This is mine:

You can also rearrange the order of the contents of your My Pages too.

Tim, yes I can do a poll and I am thinking it's a good way to go but we'll keep the opinions and ideas coming in. We wouldn't want a Qld election landslide poll result would we!

If someone does put up a poll, make sure there's a 'Couldn't give a fluff' option.

I personally prefer the flat option - too many threads on this forum are unreadable if you log on and find that half a dozen people have replied at varying places through the thread. I also like having sub-forums (the group system doesn't really work that way).

The problem with large sections quoted ad-nausem is a real one but just boils down to good netiquette. If a forum is lucky enough to have active moderators, this can be controlled and the defaulter given some quiet counselling on the side. Yes, I have been a moderator and an administrator, on two forums, one of which was larger and more active than this one. Good moderation can work, but it depends on having a group of active moderators.

Make me vote, and I'll vote for the flat option ... but leaving things as they are isn't going to drive me away. The activity on this forum suggests that most members are also comfortable with the way it works.

To quote someone I usually just cut and paste. I'm not fussed- happy the way it is. I roll my eyes at the content of the forum, not the format ;-))

Of course, first you have to find someone who's said something worthy of including in your own erudite posts. It's a worry ...

I hate forums that post quotes.

Quotes on websites are frequently used to mock and repeating what has already been written occupies too much screen space.  I'm also glad that there is none of that kudos crap ("premium member" or '1653 contributions' or smart-arse personal mottos)

I like the aparent randomness of responses. It makes you look a bit harder for the gems.

kudos!

Just the appearance of Matt B gets kudos. No need to spell it out (Woops I just did).
