This morning at about 6.00am many of us were wishing that we were on Copacabana Beach. It was raining and the forecast was for further rain and hail! Would anyone turn up for the GW rides??
By 7.00am it had cleared up at Gawler and 28 riders did front up to ride!! Wonderful to see Reidy and Randall come out again for a GW ride. Andrew also turned up for his first ride in a few weeks (recovering from a knee injury). You will recall that last week Terry ended up in hospital after the ride with a heart problem. Well, he was one of the first ones there today and absolutely rearing to go. What a champion!
21 of the group rode the FLAT route and what a blast it was. The 24km spin to Two Wells was a gem of a leg. The wind was not too bad and we sat on about 28kph all the way to TW. The riders stayed in groups and there was lot’s of chatting as we buzzed along side by side.
The real buzz though was experienced on the Hayman Road leg. The wind was squarely behind us and everyone zoomed along at about 35-40kph. We then rode through the township of Angle Vale and back on to the Stuart O’Grady Bikeway for the last leg of the ride. Riding conditions remained extremely favourable. It was evident that it had been raining whilst we on the road, but we dodged all of the rain and arrived back at Jaspers just after 10.00am….dry as a bone! Average speed over the 55km ride for most riders hovered around 27-32kph.
7 riders rode the gruelling 71km HILLS route and they just loved it. Over 1000 meters climbed, up and down 10/11 degree hills, through a beautiful part of SA taking in Kersbrook, One Tree Hill, Mt Crawford Forest and Williamstown. Young Carmen rode the descents in suicidal TDF style, crouched low on the bike. You should have seen the grin on his face when he got home! This was one tough ride taking over 4 hours and we congratulate all of the HILLS riders on completing it in fine style!
Those who rode today will post more details on their ride experience, so stay tuned. See also the photo gallery below for lot’s more! “I can’t get no Satisfaction” is a fabulous Stone’s song however you will read later from those who rode today that Satisfaction is guaranteed on the Gawler Wheelers Group Rides!
NEXT WEEK: We will be holding one big group ride through the Barossa Valley. It’s the Gomersal Road route with a twist…we will be riding the route in reverse for the first time ever. Everyone is welcome…including YOU. Don’t miss this one…it will be a sensational ride experience! Details will be posted on AC Events soon.
The Rolling Stones performed their first live gig on July 12th 1962 at the Marquee Club in London. 44 years later they played in front of 1.5million people at Copacabana Beach, Rio De Janeiro, on the 18th February 2006. ENJOY!

HOT OFF THE PRESS. Details of next weeks (July 21st) Gawler Wheelers Group Ride have now been posted on AC Events. Link below. We will be riding this route in the reverse direction for the first time ever. It should be a beauty...dont't miss it. ALL WELCOME!
What a cracker! It was nice to see everyone bunching up on the way out to Two Wells and riding together as a group.
As Frank said, the Hayman Rd leg was a cracker with a fair amount of 40+ km/h riding.
Oh, and thanks Warren for the compliment! Might have to crack out the smaller knicks that I have in stock that I have never worn. You are right, the current ones are hanging off me. This will be the 2nd time I have had to go for a smaller set of knicks now in around a year...
Still absolutely loving my group rides with Gawler Wheelers!
Yer Lee the speed was up there hey ? geezuuusss.. Was at one stage I though maybe just maybe I should have taken those Jumper Leads that Carl soo kindly offered to me this and put them to good use LMAO... You rode well this morning Lee. You should pretty happy how you went today mate :)
I am Terry! Now that I find myself regularly running out of gears on the flat rides, there is only one thing left that I can do.
I just have to do what you, Gary and Mark have said; turn my legs faster!
You have the strong legs Lee..Time to take advantage of them and utilize other boundaries with them..
Your not spinning out Lee..your cadence when you went past me saying your on the last cog and spinning out was I guessed around 70. You got 30 revs to go mate LOL
So Lee...how much have you lost? Is the weight lost by intenetion and do you put it down to the cycling?
@Frank, I am actually heavier now than when I started riding, but like I said I keep having to buy smaller clothes all the time!
I guess it would be fair to say that I have a fair bit less body fat than I had before. I started cycling to try and reduce my weight and improve my health, but got a little lost along the way, as I just kept doing it because I enjoy it! Can't say that I am disappointed that I have to keep buying smaller knicks.
I think it would be fair to say that 100% can be put down to cycling, as I don't really eat any healthier than I used to. My protein intake may be a bit higher due to protein shakes, but I would say I haven't really changed my diet at all...
Cheers Kev. Next time we all might drop in to you place for a coffee??
Showing my age - - saw the Stones live in Melbourne in the 1960s !
What were they like live Terry....can you remember or were you stoned?
