Socks for winter

Feet are starting to get cold. What's your recommendation for socks for winter and where do I get them in Adelaide? Bugger online shopping. I want to wear them tomorrow!

i would advise you to just buy a pair of cycling specific socks.  I too went a long time resisting it, and now I throw a tantrum if I can't find one of the three pairs I have.  They're just more comfortable for cycling, that's it.

My Garneau cycling socks are pretty good . They have a bit of thick cotton cushioning on the top of the foot which relieves the pressure from the straps on your cycling shoes ,,and comforts your foot on the up stoke of your crank . There is also plenty of ventilation in the socks on the top of your foot ..They're comfy & worth it ..

Junk mail of a booklet on aids for the elderly, frail or with a disability, e.g. special cutlery for those with severe arthritis. Included socks with some aluminium content. Wondered if these would be nice when camping in cooler weather, but also about washing and durability. Told that the aluminium emergency blankets are not that durable and make crinkly sound (so no good for increasing warmth of sleeping bag when cycle touring).

Im looking at buying my first pair of overshoes for keeping my feet dry so i can keep riding through winter.  Cold and wet feet are so uncomfortable and demoralising. 

What are some good materials, thickness and brands that you guys have used?  anything to avoid? 

(I dont want the lightweight type that keep the wind out and are only water 'resistant').

I have some waterproof Netti ones, made of a sort of light wetsuit material.  Make sure you get the right size, though, because mine are a tad small and so I keep ripping the rubber bottom.

Even for the rain, I just prefer the light water resistant ones I have, which are Giordana, lycra.  It keeps a bit of the water out while you're pedalling furiously to get home and into the hot shower!

Holeproof Explorers worn inside the steelcaps.  Lovely and warm, boots keep the feet dry.  (Must be used with with plain pedals, or modified toe clips, with or without straps.)
