Funnily enough, old golf shirts really are the best thing I know for cleaning chains.

Permalink Reply by Just another psycho-list on December 25, 2011 at 21:15 Welcome to the world of the Garmin edge 500, Trent. I have had nothing but problems with mine since the day I first started trying to use it. I also bought mine at Bicycle Express and I took it back a few times, but got nowhere. There are too many problems with it to go into here, now, but one of the problems was with the heart rate strap. BExpress didn't seem very interested in helping me to get it going. One guy in there said that he wouldn't look at the heart monitor as the strap as I had used, might have sweat on it and that I should go home and wash it first.
The problems continued (I bought it in August) and it only uploaded the first few rides and it tells me it is not compatible with my computer.
There is a Garmin forum type of thing on the net and you can see comments that people have made about having to wade through forums to try and find solutions to their Garmin problems. There is a contact email for Garmin and I have tried this at least three times.
I have given up now. BExpress doesn't seem to want to help. Threw my strap away somewhere in frustration (probably could find it if I search, but I don't want to.)
I feel that was $600 wasted.

Permalink Reply by Dstone on December 27, 2011 at 10:21 I have a fair bit of experience with Garmins. The problem sounds like the unit is halfway through a firmware update as exactly the same thing happened to a mate of mines. Plug it back into your PC update the update software and then update your garmin. Do not let your PC/MAC go into standby or hibernate while this is happening. This how i fixed my mates.
Garmin straps have to be tighter then polar in my experience, I found mine giving relly wierd readings while descdending ( hunched over ) but since tighteneing no probs.
Dont give up on the Garmin it just sounds like a glitch. Remember it is a fairly involved piece of kit so you have to expect the odd wobbly. Sorry to here about your lack of support.
