Channel 7 just came to my office to film me for a story tonight after seeing my YouTube channel. They're doing a story on ... I dunno, something cycling-related ... it all happened pretty quickly.
Anyway, http://www.youtube.com/user/DuthyStreet
Hooray for spy glasses?

Tuesday 20-Mar-2012 Heather emailed her notes of two cycling conferences to 37 elected local council members who appear to support cycling, sustainable transport, sustainability and/or the environment. Good response from four councillors. Cr Auricht has organised for the Charles Sturt Council phone system, when on hold, to play recorded driver education messages about cycling.

Permalink Reply by heather on April 19, 2012 at 20:08 Thanks. Let me know the outcome. If positive, will include in the BUG News.

Permalink Reply by heather on April 20, 2012 at 11:22 Thanks for that info. During the last local council elections, I formed the AC group Vote For Cyclists and read the election blurbs of about 1200 candidates. I did not notice that she cycles, or I would have invited her to present her ideas to the cycling electorate.
Permalink Reply by Chris Russell on April 20, 2012 at 21:38 I just watched the video too. I suppose the generic message was an educational one however I don't know where they go that "Councils about to crack down" line! I was surprised at the data we gathered earlier in the year - I think 16 metro Councils issued 7,400 fines for bike lane infringements in 2011 calendar year. At $225 seems a pretty strong message to me going out a lot of times.
I think that was why West Torrens put forward the motion seeking State Education campaign. They figure that with that level of fines there is an "understanding" problem which won't be solved by fines (alone).
Of course whether the State listens is another thing but that will probably depend on budget and creativity.
I hardly think a motion carried at an LGA meeting seeking an education campaign is "Councils about to crackdown" but hey if motorists think that's about to happen, not a bad thing.
Permalink Reply by Chris Russell on April 19, 2012 at 21:38 I didn't see it either so I hope I said something sensible! Sophie McRae's comment reflects what happened at LGA General Meeting.
The kid next door told me he saw me on television, and when I asked him he said it was something good about cycling.
Works for me!
