So apparently I'm going to be on Channel 7 news tonight

Channel 7 just came to my office to film me for a story tonight after seeing my YouTube channel. They're doing a story on ... I dunno, something cycling-related ... it all happened pretty quickly.

Anyway, http://www.youtube.com/user/DuthyStreet

Hooray for spy glasses?

By the way, the calm down comment was a strange inclusion and something I said on a completely unrelated matter. They'd asked if I ever get abused, and I said that people spend more time being angry at me for slowing them down than I spent holding them up, then the calm down comment.

It's interesting to hear your side of the story but I thought the calm down comment was quite well placed. Again it was for everybody across the spectrum nice finish I thought even if it was not exactly the way you meant it.

The media will edit the material to emphasize whatever they want.

Tell me about it! In the intro they referred to me as "the angry cyclist taking the law into his own hands"! I didn't agree that increasing fines would help either - I think increasing awareness by encouraging cycling is best. I almost think allowing people to ride without helmets would beneficially increase the number of bike commuters ... not that I'd take chances without one myself.

I think more ticketing and the current fine rate would educate drivers. I hear stories third hand of how someone was fined for parking in a bicycle lane. Reaction that a trivial offence that does not warrant the current fine (drivers omit that they are placing cyclists in danger). But the word spreads to remind other drivers that if you park in a bicycle lane, sometimes risk a fine. Change that to usually get a fine, and parking in bicycle lanes would reduce markedly.

Maybe some sort of campaign is in order? A group ride down Duthy Street during rush hour would get noticed.

Looks like to TV vid has been pulled…

I can still see it - perhaps try browsing their video page:

Just watched it. Twas a good report, well done Ruddager (ya scruffy, bearded old git - was that a fixie you were riding?)

Yeah I asked them if currently having a pretty ugly beard would be a problem. They didn't actually film me riding at any point, but I just road a flat-bar roadie anyway, so double-no.

Certainly is a big problem - few days ago I was driving home from work along the Salisbury Hwy.  some idiot just could not wait to get past everyone, so he drove in the bicycle lane for a couple of hundred metres... well done! luckily there were no cyclists at the time!
