Ride Summary:
February 27th 2011: Wilson Devo posts a discussion on AC re whether there is any interest in the Gawler area for cyclists wishing to ride in a bunch ride. (See photo gallery below).
March 5th 2011: Following a lukewarm response Wilson & yours truly meet, conduct a reccie ride and decide to post on AC Events the inaugural Gawler Wheelers Group Ride.
March 12th 2011: The first GW Group Ride is held with 9 riders participating.
Sept 10th 2011: We held our 6 month anniversary ride today with a record 43 riders turning up to help us celebrate this very special occasion. We warmly welcomed 3 newbies who joined us on their first GW ride: Troy, Darryl and Shane (see photo below).
We appropriately ventured down the same route that we rode on March 12th. The weather was fine, albeit blustery on the first leg down the Stuart O’Grady Bikeway. Many sub-groups formed based on preferred speed and the ride was filled with a sense of celebration and achievement.
The excitement continued back at Jaspers Café where the brand new Gawler Wheelers jerseys were distributed. Sneek peek of the new jerseys in the photo gallery below.
From humble beginnings Gawler Wheelers has evolved into a vibrant fun cycling group with new-comers always welcome. Many new friendships have formed via GW since March, and we aim to cater for cyclists of all abilities. Our numbers continue to increase each week and the riders come from both local areas and the metro area. Age of the riders varies from 20 yrs to 60+ yrs! I will let others talk more about the last 6 months as they reply to this post.
Thank you to all who ride with Gawler Wheelers…it is you who make GW what it is today. Thank you also to Angus and the wider AC community for your continued support and interest.
NEXT WEEK: We will hold two concurrent rides; a flat ride and a hills ride. Details will be posted on AC Events tomorrow. YOU are welcome to attend. Today's photo gallery follows below.

Thanks Clive :o) and thanks to Chris, Mick and Mark for looking after me. I'm still rounding up the rear, but I know I am improving with each ride, and your encouragement makes the world of difference to me. I was especially amused when Mick pointed out the railway overpass (that's Mount Everest to me) and said to me "I'll talk and you ride".
I'm very grateful that the GW group accommodates my current cycling ability. It's one of the few group rides I feel I can attempt and I appreciate the encouragement and support. To anyone else who doesn't think they are fast enough or fit enough, come out and give GW a go. If I can do it, ANYONE can do it :o)
You did great sweetie, I'm really proud of you!
Permalink Reply by Andrew on September 10, 2011 at 17:23 Well done Gawler Wheelers (esp. Frank, Wilson, Mick, Richard, Barry...etc!). You should be proud of what you have created. Wattsy
6 months, 75+ members, top looking jerseys it has been a huge success providing the riders from the Northern suburbs a great bunch to ride with on some of the best roads in the Barossa. Who would have thought that an idea by Wilson & Frank could have grown this quickly, and myself along with 75 others members could not be happier. I think Frank has not missed a ride since its start, did not want riders turning up and no one being there to greet them. Wilson for his time to make sure routes, maps and rules are second to none as far as rider well being is looked after. Today the puncture fairies must have know of the occasion as first time in 10-15 rides down the SOB (son of *****) for those who have punctures, let us off for once.
Here's to many more rides with a great bunch. For those that want to see the efforts of those few, treat your self and come ride with us, you will not regret it.
Northern Suburb riders are good but so are the Eastern Suburb riders that love to join you!
Permalink Reply by Dave, Lewiston on September 10, 2011 at 18:57 +1 Mick. GW is now a brand name. And today, NO PUNCTURES! (and if Gary got one, it was actually before the ride began, so doesn't count, does it...).
And Clive, awesome effort again. And there were a few other awesome efforts as well, too numerous to mention. Another fun day!
An interesting day that ended up being very fullfilling and enjoyable. Got up nice and early and almost jumped back into bed as it was so blimen cold..slapped myself out of it and got on my gear and it payed off in the end for it was fantastic. Enjoyed keeping up with Wilson's group or as i call them "the fast pack" and getting healthy as a rabbit for it. Loving every moment of cycling and will wear my GW jersey with pride whenever and wherever my front wheel takes me. Thanks guys, Sleep well..i know i will.
Great ride today, got in before the rain came. The jerseys look great. Thanks to Wilson and Frank for your vision and to Gary for the jerseys. Look forward to my next GW ride.
