After my stupid curb stack yesterday, I checked over the frame on the way out from the bike locker at work and found this (attached).
Strangely, its the opposite side of the bike than the side I went down on, so all I can possibly think is that maybe my shoe clipped it on the way over, as there is absolutely no other way this could have happened unless someone mistreated the bike in the bike shed.

Anyway - given that it is unlikely to be impact related - should I just pop some clear nail polish on it and forget it, or do you think its worth a trip to the LBS to check it out?

FYI it's on the right hand seat stay, about half way down.

Ouch! I'd be worried, but, if you can see that it is only the surface epoxy that has fractured then maybe, if there are any signs that the carbon itself has suffered insult then...

Get it checked, peace of mind alone is worth it!

Hard to say, seat stays are generally quite thick with carbon as most of the pounding is transferred through those posts. I personally would not be worried but you need an expert not a jock to make the call.

Hi rossmg

That dent is definately a concern, and the carbon tube shape has been weakened by the impact.

The ideal fix is to send the frame of to one of the carbon frame repair specialists interstate and have the tube reinforced with extra carbon cloth and resin.

Regardless of the fact the tubing is not cracked it is damaged and requires a repair !

+1

Carbon in general is/should be pretty even, weakest part is where the water bottle fittings go!

if you drop it around to my house I am happy to test ride it for the next 10 years to see what will happen :-)

Definetly an excuse for a new bike....
