I am considering switching from my Shimano SPD SL pedals to Speedplays.

I have noticed that the Speedplay Zero pedals come in different materials, the chrome-moly, stainless steal and titanium. I can get the chrome-moly pedals for $140, would there be a huge difference if I got the stainless steel pedals for an extra $50? Anyone have previous experiences with Speedplay?

Also, how well do the cleats hold up? My Shimano ones I have at the moment are not that old but already rippped apart at places.

Thanks

I go for stainless steel over the chrome-moly due to better bearings from what I have been told

Latest edition of Ride magazine has a comprehensive run down on all the available cleat systems.

All pedals come in diff materials!
Speed play take a bit of getting used to, biggest difference is weight and strength!

They have good adjustable float, need a bit more movement to click out and need to be greased via its Grease port!

I am not 100% sure they will fit where the spd's were but u better check that!

Try time pedals, built to last!

I just love the double sided entry on my speed play. They are so easy to use.

They do however need constant TLC via a grease gun. No more work than looking after you chain though.

I started riding with Look Keo pedals and moved onto Speedplays after being fed up with one sided entry and haven't looked back. I am still on my original set of cleats after >5000km of riding. The pedals themselves receive grease every 6-8 weeks. It isn't hard to maintain them. The dual entry is worth it. And I also have stainless steel.

They are the most adjustable of all the systems with float and exit tension. They will fit pretty much any shoes that SPD's fit to.

I've also done about 5000kms on my Speedplays and they have been brilliant. Mine were the CroMoly version, but I have just ordered a new set of the stainless ones.
One piece of advice I would give is to also buy the stainless shims which are recommended for use on carbon soled shoes, and also the rubber cafe caps for walking around.
