Ride Summary:
It was fitting that for our last ride for 2011 a record 66 riders participated despite the uncertainty regarding the weather. Amongst the 66 were newbies Ann, Sam, Neville, Sean, Peter, John, Steve, Peter, Jim and 7 year old Matthew (now our youngest rider ever!)
Today’s ride was along the Stuart O’Grady Bikeway. The first 25kms was a blast with a tailwind that led to speeds of well over 40kph. The trip back was a different story as we all battled a severe headwind. However the Xmas spirit made the ride enjoyable in any event and it was great to see many dressed for the occasion (see photos below).
Following the ride we all moved to Clonlea Park for our Xmas Social Gathering where we were joined by many family members. The rain held off for most of the time!. A special thanks to Reidy who organised the event.
It has been 9 months since Gawler Wheelers started and it has now developed into a riding group that we are all very proud of. People ride with GW for various reasons and whatever the reason it is our pleasure to have you ride with us. The people who come on our rides make GW what it is. (Tell us your GW story!). Newbies are always welcome.
Thank you to all those who have ridden with GW in 2011, and to all of the AC family for your support and encouragement during the year. Seasons Greetings to you and your loved ones. May peace and good health always accompany you.
In closing we would like to say hi to GW member Rob who had a health scare during the week. Speedy recovery mate....we all missed you and Lorraine today.
NEXT YEAR: Our first rides for 2012 will be on January 7th through the Barossa Valley and one route will include Menglers Hill. YOU are welcome to attend. Details will be posted on AC Events soon. Today’s photo gallery follows:

Permalink Reply by Lee Bakes on December 17, 2011 at 22:13 Another fantastic ride with a fantastic group of people. For the first time ever, I rode to Jaspers before the ride after Janet dared me to ride instead of drive. I then did the ride back to Jaspers. After riding back to Jaspers I thought that I might ride home via The SOB so that I could avoid the traffic on Main North road. It wasn't until I got home that I realised that I had ridden about 90 km. It wasn't that long ago that I would have struggled to do 30 km. I can thank Janet and everyone else from Gawler Wheelers for helping me improve. Thanks guys, have a good Christmas and new year. Will see you next year!
Permalink Reply by Old Macdonald (Jon) on December 17, 2011 at 22:40 What a ride, the wind! For the southbound trip of the SOB Strava tells me I did 21.7 km for an average speed of 43.5 km/hr! Pity I estimate I averaged 23 km/hr for the north bound trip from Petherton road (too frightened to actually work it out). Thanks to everybody who makes these rides happen and enjoyable. Special thanks to Frank and Wilson for the years effort!
Also, sorry we upset you Nick, I'll be nice to you from now on. Hope the bike didn't sustain any damage from that pot hole, I won't mention the P word.
Merry Chistmas all.
Great year, great company, great day. Thanks to Frank and Devo for all the hard work put in through the year to make every Saturday happen. A speedy recovery to Rob hope to see you and Lorraine out next year. All the best to the Gawler Wheelers family and freinds for Christmas and the New Year.
Permalink Reply by Andrew on December 18, 2011 at 8:12 That was not just a bike ride, THAT looked like a great community event! Well done to all of the Gawler Wheelers on what you have created this year. Have a safe and merry Christmas and an ever more successful new year.
P.S. Give us a heads-up on what you'll be doing for your first birthday and when it will be.
Permalink Reply by Matt Brennan on December 18, 2011 at 9:07 Great turnout considering the forecast, and it looks like all had a great time.
Well done on a fantastic year GWers!
Permalink Reply by Pete Roberts on December 18, 2011 at 9:24 So the year is over for Gawler Wheelers, and what a fantastic year its been.
I have always enjoyed cycling, but this year, Saturday Mornings have become the highlight of my week: Getting up early, riding with 'like minded people' , always trying to push my self to new levels, riding new routes, sucking on back wheels, lots of coffee at Jaspers... the list of good things about GW goes on...
I would loved to have ridden yesterday, but it wasn't to be. Still, I made it to the party afterwards in time for the speeches. Said "Hi" to a few, missed a few more, but there's always next year.
Cycling, like any sport has it's risks, and a few of us have had a spill on the road, so get well soon those 'Off' the bike at the moment, and 'STAY SAFE EVERYONE !'
Merry Xmas gang !!!
Thanks GW this time last year I didn't know most of you, now we are all good friends. I am very proud to be a GW. Also thanks to the great staff at Jaspers Cafe (the best coffee in Gawler).
Special thanks to Frank and Wilson Devo!
Merry Christmas and Happy New year to all my GW mates!
Very sad to have missed the ride and party yesterday, but hope to see you all fit and riding in 2012 for more GW action. And I made the Bunyip photo so I feel famous now!
Permalink Reply by RD6 on December 18, 2011 at 10:20 one of the 2012 goals is to ride with GW. just for the experience
We'd love to have you mate! Also if it's too far from Aldinga you are welcome to stay in on of my spare bedrooms in Newton the night before!
