Just setting up the hard drive for the week and realised that the La Vuelta highlights start Sunday. Flicked to Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday etc and noticed that the highlights package goes for a whole 15 minutes. Many of us were let down by channel 9s coverage of the tour down under but 15 minutes is pretty bad for the station that prides itself on its cycling coverage.

That's probably why SBS isn't showing it.
Cheers

Permalink Reply by Gus K on August 15, 2012 at 21:27 My glass half empty reply is the rights are very expensive, especially when I assume they need to buy in presentation from another network overseas, and they blew their budget on the Tour de France.
Poor old Vuelta, it just will always be the little brother to the Giro and the TdF and I would also add the Spring classics.

Permalink Reply by snappy_don on August 16, 2012 at 12:15 SBS 1 and Cycling Central web stream are showing 8 selected stages starting with stage 8 on Sunday week, plus the 15 minute daily update. They're concentrating on the second half of the race to show the best mountain stages and then the final three days. A bit disappointing perhaps, but similar to their Giro set up.

What the … these dates are one day "out of synch" with the official Vuelta website. Anyone got any ideas when the stages are actually on
SBS has had a much longer relationship with the ASO (from showing the TDF for about 20yrs) than the RCS or the Vuelta organisers, so it's no surprise that they can get a little more bang for their rights purchase buck. Not only that but both the Giro & Vuelta are broadcast by Eurosport in Europe so Foxtel will always get first dibs on the full rights.
Permalink Reply by Paul Inglis on August 17, 2012 at 17:43 I don't think it's a case of Foxtel getting the rights first, just that SBS can't afford to show more than what do already. Eurosport will always show the Grand Tours and Classics and SBS could as well if they could afford it but right now they can only afford the to show the Tour in full. Apparently RCS was asking too much when SBS was considering showing the Giro in full, therefore they only showed some stages.
Also La Vuelta is partially owned or organised by ASO now anyway.
Permalink Reply by Dstone on August 16, 2012 at 17:39 I for one am grateful for all the coverage we can get. It wasn't that long ago that TDF was only half an hour per night and stuff all other races. When I started riding you would be lucky to get 1 hour a year of the tour on Wide World of Sports with Max Walker and Ken Sutcliffe. Give it time and there will be more but SBS will need to find the commercial value in it. So start writing to SBS not to forums if you want it changed.
The Veulta is much better viewing then the Tour IMHO.

If SBS doesn't have the rights to stream all of the stages & Foxtel isn't an option, there's always cyclingfans.com(might be .tv) that generally hosts a decent stream of the Eurosport coverage.
