Adelaide Cyclists

The ALP's policy is now online.

If you are looking for some other meaty reading EcoVelo posted about a cycling in Sydney and Melbourne comparative study.

Study link [pdf]

The researchers found Sydney to be unusually bike-un-friendly, with Pucher quoted in the Sydney Morning Heraldas saying, “Whether I was a pedestrian or cyclist I found the level of the hostility of Sydney motorists worse than I had seen anywhere in the
world.”

Now... where is the connection between these two documents? We know from the interview with Minister Conlon he is a cyclist and apparently Mike Rann has promised to come out on a group ride (he's even been seen sitting on a bicycle)

For goodness sake! I'm glad I didn't need to print that document to read it... who ever set it out deserves to be shot! As if a document on green space, cycling and the environment is set out to waste THAT much paper!!! (see pages 3, 4, 5 & 9)

I think the assumption is that no one will really print it off. What we should do is save it somewhere public (say at the BISA site) before it can be changed or otherwise done away with (as Trish White's transport plan was) and then - if the current Gov't is re-elected, they can be held suitably to account!

Cycling is an active pursuit per se. You either ride the bike or you don't (as I have found to my cost recently). You can't talk about it credibly if you don't 'walk the walk'. That's why I personally support the current Minister - because he's on the bike! Whatever else you might think about him or his colleagues, the point is that they are responding to the voice of cycling in a positive fashion. Minister Conlon in particular is starting to step away from Business As Usual to take a different path. I think all Adelaide bike users should try to turn up at the new bridge on Friday, line up in an orderly fashion and shake Patrick's hand and congratulate him! Make him feel great about the little things he can do every day to make the lot of the bicycle user better. Maybe then we'll see more of the big gestures we need to see. As they say, we get the governments we deserve. Unless we interact and talk to government we can't expect them to answer us.

True, except that some things are more important than a new bridge over South road. and I'm not talking about layouts and paper usage here… Just saying.

Hi All, have I missed something, or is the ALP policy lacking a time line? I am excited to see a plan, but some more specific (and hence accountable) statements about when things are planned would be welcome.

An update:

The liberal policy is here.

The Greens policy is here

Note I see only the ALP have actually used the word 'cycling' their policy title. The others are transport.
