Adelaide Cyclists

Mum's just moved to the city, and is hoping to ride her bike rather than drive her car. Her bike was banished to a damp shed for 15 years and isn't in very good nick, but she really likes it. It's rusty, needs new tyres, chain, cables and seat, but other than that it seems to be ok. The chromed bits are quite tarnished...

As a pressie, I was thinking I'd get it resprayed for her - any recommendations for where to get it done? She mentioned that she'd like to have the logos and stuff on it still - so they'd need to be (re)produced somehow. The bike's a 3-speed Crescent bike from 1980s Sweden...it's a quite awful turquoise at the moment...shiny red would be great! :)

Hi There

I don't know about spray painters who do bicycles, but I recently got a bike powder coated by Central Powder Coaters
(33 Kent Rd Keswick SA 5035 (08) 8351 1133) for my daughter - they came recommended to me by a friend who has had several bikes frames done by them, and when I was there they had about 6 frames awaiting collection - so I guess they have some experience in this area! Frame and forks was $50 including sand blasting - got it done in flame red and it came out really nice - http://www.flickr.com/photos/eternitycycling/4011969723/in/set-7215...

Don't know what you could do about reproducing the decals - all I could recommend is that you search for them on the internet and try to get them reproduced (somehow!)

Cheers

Jeremy

That is exactly what I'm after - colour and all! I guess I could create some stick-on decals, have them cut out in plastic/thin vinyl and then give it a clear-coat or two...

Thanks for the recommendation! (and what a price!)

Yes, what a price!! I just sprayed 2 coats of dulux on a bike (1 can) and just bought another can which might just cover it -- the cans are $13 each and it's really hard to do evenly and I have to wait for a still night when there is no wind and then time gets away from me so $50 sounds unreal - - then there is the sanding which I bought a cheapish sander for. I was going to do a coat tonight but now I think bugger it..

As for decals you are right. I would like to do my old Ricardo but something unique to it would be missing. There is a seller on eBay in the US that sells decals - you could turn it into a Colnago!!

The other thing you could do would be to create an interesting stencil and get some model enamel and paint it on.

I saw that little red bike crossing the Parade a couple of weeks ago. Very distinctive!

I recommend Central Powdercoaters, Kent St, Richmond as well. They charge about $50 per frame I think. Any number of colours to choose from their 'coke can' display. They do all the preparation - you just need to remove everything down to the bare frame (including seat post, all bolts, head set and BB. Take any metal badges off to if you want to retain and replace them unpainted. Actual painting (with a spray gun) is labour intensive, costs lots and is very prone to chipping. Powder coating's the way to go for proletarian steeds. There are lots of powdercoaters around the city but CP really seem to have it together with regard to bikes.
You can have decals reproduced relatively easily if you take photos and tracings beforehand. You can also buy nice, stylish decal-based 'artwork' for bikes which I think is a better idea unless you are engaged in restoration.
Bikes are just 2 (sometimes 3) wheeled tools after all!
regards,
Sam Powrie.

For the decals you might try contacting a sign writer. I know when a decal was falling off my car my brother in law who was a sign writer at the time offered to replace it. I think with computers and vinyl cutting machines they can do a lot. As long as they can see what they have to recreate beforehand they can do it.

Yeah, I used to work in a vinyl cut sign shop.

One colour decals for a Ricardo or a Crescent would be a sinch (cinch? synch? how the heck is that spelled?) particularly if you could find the right font.

I too have used Central Powder Coaters (satin black thank you very much) and it was a great finish.

Hey are you chaps still happy with the sandblasting/powdercoating you got done at CPC? I just picked up a hard rubbish frame and pulled all the non-frame bits of fit last night. So looking for a place to get it pimped up with some new paint, and $50 sounds like its too good to be true...

Hi Guys, I just rang for a quote, and it's now $60 for frame and forks to be sandblasted and powder-coated. If you have troublesome chromed forks to be done he said it may cost 5-6$ more :)

The guy was super friendly, so I'm going to have my peugeot rebuild done in the next couple of weeks. There is over 100 different colours to choose from. Awesome!

Thanks to you guys for having this thread!

Just a follow-up to the above. I picked up my frame last Wednesday, and was pretty happy with the job. It cost 60$ which is a bargain for a blast and powder coat.

The powder was a little light-on under the bottom bracket, but it still got a covering. The fork which was quite pitted from the rust through the original chrome came up fantastically.

I've since put the bike back together, and the resultant Peugeot can be viewed here...
