I read an article in the Huffington Post about two cyclists being hit by a car and capturing the incident and the car's registration number on a helmet cam.
The posted comments talk about reckless cyclists that were lucky they weren't hit earlier, cutting up cars, running stop signs, riding unsafely, cutting off a cyclist behind who was trying to overtake, all sorts of downright dangerous behaviour.
I looked at the video and I can seeing nothing reckless. Sure the guy filming rolled through a 4 way stop sign intersection but the car driver had stopped and was giving way, maybe the leader had already stopped, you can't tell. And they turn right at a stop sign without stopping, but its into a curb lane and they are going slow with no traffic they need to give way to.
I can see nothing in this video which I wouldn't do. Does anyone think they are being reckless?
They're on the wrong side of the road!!
But seriously, no. It's like the car went out of its way to hit them both.
Did they get the driver????
the only thing that i didnt like was the right turn at the stop sign where they rolled straight through.
But Trent, we don't know the local road rules! I noticed the first stop sign was a 4 way stop so it looks like the USA somewhere near a place called walnut Creek! In general, I can't see to much bad about the footage. Not sure about the California rule if they have to stop before proceeding to do a right turn through a stop sign or stop light of if they only have to give due care but drivers are allowed to go through red lights there!
I don't know the law in California, but the term "California stop" means not stopping but just slowing and rolling though a right hand turn at a stop sign or red light. In Canada in all provinces but Quebec one is permitted to turn right on a red but must come to a complete stop first.
Nasty video - good to see the culprit caught on tape...
They got the useless dropkick thanks to the video camera.
These cameras seem to be worth their weight in gold at times like that.
They were riding in a safe manner. The car appears to be veering into them at quite a sharp angle.
Yep, either the driver purposely targets the cyclists or it's a bad case of driver inattention. If it's the latter, there's a lesson in that for drivers and cyclists alike.
I couldnt see the car's brake lights on so i would say it was deliberate.
Thank goodness for his helmet... ;)
Definitely looked like a deliberate attempt to give them a little bump, fortunately they both were able to walk away from it.
Glad they caught the driver.
I would have stopped at those signs. But I don't know the laws where they are. I know in the US you are allowed to turn right on a stop light, so maybe they can turn on signs as well.
Other than that they seemed to be riding safely enough. The car either deliberately tried to hit them, or just took the corner way too wide.
I have an 808 #16 keyring camera mounted to my bike now for just such occasions. If I get skittled, they're going to be caught.
