Rebuild dreams and hurdles. Advice would be nice.

I'll start with some background. Late last year I stayed in Hobart for a few weeks, and whilst I was there I bought an old ten speed roadie from the tip shop (the tip shop is possibly the greatest place in the world, but I digress). I was flying, so couldn't bring it back, but am going to be able to get it soon, and am thinking about stripping it right down, and then doing a bit of a rebuild. I expect I'll be needing most of a new group set and some new (closer to round) wheels, though I'll recycle what I can.

Considering I'm on a pretty low uni student budget budget, have you got any advice about where I should look for parts on the cheap?

I'm also all ears for any easy mistakes that I should avoid making.

Thanks!

Where do i start?  if your on a low gudget and you bike is nother special (not collectable not sought after, not liteweight etc) i would'nt touch it, you'll be up for more $$ than its worth. Look around on ebay, gumtree etc for whole bike thats in good nick.  If you do want to restor it, your up for tools, tyres 27"? (+$), paint etc etc, fish oil insde tubes, the list goes on.  Good luck.

Thanks Ben,

It will probably cost me more than it's worth, but I'm of the opinion that it's not worth very much. It's more that I'd like to make a nice looking bike but make sure that it rides at least ok - enough to be enjoyable in the hills, though it's never likely to be quick.

but if it costs me too much (more than $3-400) to make it decent, then I'll probably convert it into a fixie instead.

"Bikes for Refugees" and the BISA community workshop at Plympton. BfR, we  have secondhand parts, most of what might be needed for an old 27 in. As you are a uni student, we can do them very cheap. BISA community workshop, the idea is people can bring bikes in and get help to fix them up.  BfR, we're usually open Saturday afternoons - text me on 0435 02 16 81 - if you want to come round. Bring the bike & we can see what it needs.   Mike
Thanks Mike! I'm not going to have the bike for a couple of weeks yet, but once I've worked out what I'm going to do, I'll be sure to give you a text.

It's probably worth stripping and cleaning it to actually see what you have under there. I bought my bike from the BfR 'garage sale' and am almost ready to have it stripped so I can repaint it.

sure, i've spent the cost of a new roadie from torpedo on it, but it's going to have the same character as the original, just more speeds on the cassette.
