Rode today with Galwer Wheelers out to Mallala it was over 100kms for me when I got home. I was doing fine on first leg into Two Wells but after Mallala could only really keep in the pack. Thanks to some top riding by Daniel I ended with 32km/h avg.
Question 1
Do you guys have days when just not feeling up to it, fro the whole day or part of it? Do you put it down to preparation for the ride? Or just sometimes not strong that day? I felt really drain of energy when we reached Jaspers(Galwer) and needed some food straight away(sugar hit).
Question 2
Do you guys use protein shakes after rides or anything else to help build muscle and recover? I do realise some of you will say that they are full of crap etc but that is whole other discussion.
Question 3
What sort of workouts do you do apart from riding or is it just about the bike?
Question 4
Stretching do you do it before and after a ride? I have been told by Dr need to be more flexible. I have never really stretched at all before or after and never been tight after a ride.
Thanks guys
I love cycling and want to continue to improve my performance.

Get a Heart Rate monitor if you don't already have one - you can't really train properly without one.
My 2 cents worth is available to you at a bargain 1.5 cents...

Yes get days like that all the time. I distinguish between how I feel (e.g unenthusiastic ) and how I am performing measured by time and speed (e.g more or less as usual). Have seen many touring riders, who feel lousy with colds, etc still put in creditable days riding, then the same next day, and still get over their colds . How one is feeling, is not always an accurate guide, to how one will perform, or is performing. So may be mental factors also . But then again have days when I genuinely do not feel up to it - my body tells me it needs a rest....

Ah, The Wall. I eat ahead of a ride ie big supper and breakfast. But still hit The Wall after 2 hours. Feel awful for 30 min, then get some strength back, which is presumably my body accessing different energy sources.. Others find glucose hits help, for me, not so.
Question 2 Do you guys use protein shakes after rides or anything else to help build muscle and recover?
No, just normal food, . If healthy diet should be OK. The point is not whether protein shakes are full of crap. It is whether you get enough protein anyway. Probably depends on your level of cycling.
Question 3 What sort of workouts do you do apart from riding ...?
Nil.
Question 4 Stretching do you do it before and after a ride? I have been told by Dr need to be more flexible. I have never really stretched at all before or after and never been tight after a ride.
maybe depends on individual. I found no difference between stretches and not stretchning Tho sometimes after long rides will stretch a bit to cool down.
