Sad and amazing all at the same time from:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/poels-to-be-transferred-to-maastric...

He crashes in that terrible one about 30Km out on stage 6 and gets back on and rides 10Km more!

Quote:

He is suffering from a host of internal injuries: a ruptured spleen and kidney, a bruised lung and three broken ribs

Ouch! Reminds me of the time when O'Grady (if I remember correctly) crashed on a downhill section into the guard rail breaking lots of things and tries to remount and keep going. That was also a real OMG moment!

Yep those pros are a tuff bunch of athletes, they use the word "grueling" to describe professional cycling - I think we can soak up a little of that glory ;-)

Jens

When Jens falls off, they get the doctor to sooth the ROAD's bruises

+1.

He was riding a Bianchi Oltre...double ouch!!

at least he gets another one for free!

Serious injuries - should be in hospital.

Maybe didnt want to. Understandable -  given  the State's mandatory after-crash blood sample for anyone involved in a crash -  to check for  for drugs and alcohol.???

to be Pro you need to be made from the right stuff...they earn every cent and cycling can be very cruel sport with massive highs one moment and deep lows the next....
No ride, no place no price money!

Adrenalin be so high, it's possible the real injuries are not felt at the time!

I was riding with a bloke who stacked it, two cracked ribs, believe me he is a tough customer and he felt it alright, it took many weeks to heal too! Ouch!

Tough as nails !!
Poor Wout , sounds like he needs drugs now , he's still in a lot of pain .

I am amazed at the cyclists with lesser injuries who keep going: a broken bone in the wrist, and a fixed dislocated shoulder that would still be tender. Didn't one finish the stage with a hairline fracture of the pelvis? Two years ago Cadell was riding with a broken elbow.

Riding with a broken spirit is the toughest gig.

It would break my heart to see my bike broken.
