Us guys up North are planning a ride to Port Elliott and I was just working on same possible routes. Last time we ended up using the Victor Harbour Rd to get to Willunga and then head down the bikeways etc. Was wondering if you Southerners had a way to get to Willunga without using Victor Harbour Rd it is not to nice to ride on very busy( but last time it was a long weekend)
Thanks in advance
Michael

Involves some climbing and probably some wind as well.
Or head towards Strath, Meadows, Kangarilla and miss out Willunga altogether.

Permalink Reply by Norm on April 15, 2012 at 15:25 I don't know from where "north" you want to ride from and I can only suggest from the City. Anzac Highway (part time bike lane/wide left lane) to either Marion Road or Glenelg. If Marion Rd then south on Marion Rd (part time bikelane/wide left lane) Then at Darlington using Traffic Lights at MainSouth/Marion/Flagstaff Hill road stay on west side of Main South (don't cross it) and head up Veloway. Continue on Veloway to where it meets the Shared Pathway near Panatalinga.
If you go to Glenelg, just follow the coast south along South Esplanade, it will end and you will be force to go left around Minda Home, so left then right at the T junction/roundabout and keep south, right on to Gladstone back to the coast and continue south on the Esplanade until you get to the seacliff hotel turn left at the roundabout and up the short climb, cross the railway line and immediately right, follow the Mario bikeway to the Hallet Cove Railway station, use the bridge to cross the railway line and turn hard right on to the bikeway, stay on the bike way until you hit the end of the veloway near Panatalinga. Yeap you are now at the same place as the other way.
Continue south on the shared pathway until you get to the cyclone fencing where the path is temporarly closed and turn left follow McMillan Rd (about 400m twisty) until you get to the end which will be Seaford Road, turn right and head west until you reach Grand Bouelavard (about 1km) turn left and follow it for about 1.5km (twisty) and turn left and ride east on Griffins Drive (Big Roundabout) ride about 200 m east and then right back on to bike path follow this until it crosses under the Victor Harbor Rd then ride on the main road in to McLaren Vale. stop of Coffee at one of the many cafe's I use coffee n' snax. Continue east and if you prefer more bike path then go left on to McLaren Flat road, at the bottom of the downhill section (just past Chapman) turn right on to bike path, follow it to Willunga. If you are happy to remain on the road, do not turn left to McLaren Flat but continue on Main Road, past little bakery on your left and remain on main road to Willunga.
Climb Old Willunga hill and continue which ever way you please, main road towards Victor and the turn left or head inland toward Kuipo and come in the back way via Meadows/Strath I am sure time/distance/preference with determine what you do.
Me, if not knowing the area and the turns/roads would not use Glenelg but just Anzac/Marion/Veloway

We have organised our route there we are just working on the return leg. We are riding from Galwer and thru the hills and down to Port Elliott. I have done similar ride before and used the bikeways from Willunga last time. But Victor Harbour Rd was pretty bad so looking for alt route to Willunga.
Permalink Reply by Norm on April 15, 2012 at 15:50 Oh okay, yeah your question was a little confusing, wasn't sure which way you were coming. When I am coming back from Victor Harbor I use Hindmarsh Valley Road/Sellicks Hill and then stick to Main South Road and turn off on to Pedar Road. Follow that down the gully to the left for about 1.5k's and then left on to the bike path that I mentioned earlier and head back in to the city along hte bike path. in the reverse I described.

Permalink Reply by Brian Jenkins (BJ) on April 16, 2012 at 1:50 Or to Middleton, left into Flagstaff, right into Airport Rd to Strath-Goolwa Rd, left into Stacy, left into Nangkita Rd, right into Enterprise, right into Proctor, left into Meadows Rd to Old Willunga Hill. Strath-Goolwa Rd has some traffic of course. Airport Rd is sealed, but don't know what it's like. Once you leave Strath-Goolwa Rd, good and pretty quiet with some interesting country. This goes more between the hills rather than over them.

I am looking for Stacy Road as I am thinking of giving your suggestion a try but I can't located it. I can see Creek Road with seems to link with your other suggestions could this be it?
