Play the Ball not the Man
I am a bit disappointed to read some of the recent comments on the forums. I think some of the comments have been directed at the person and not the topic of discussion. Yes, we all make mistakes and in hindsight we would all probably do things differently but I don't think that doesn't give others the right to personally attack another AC member.
One of the things that I like about AC is the free flowing nature of the site and that it is not heavily moderated. I would hate to see this change or whole heap of rules put in place to control how we use the site.
Just my thoughts...that's all.

Frankly the small amount of ad hominem I read on these forums is pretty tame to what I have read elsewhere. I would suggest that unless it becomes much more of a problem then other than some monitoring - nothing needs to be changed (ie. "big alert moderator button").

I don't think many comments here are 'out of line'. I agree this is way better than most forums for care and politeness. I'm only reading this thread after someone in a bike shop noticed my AC jacket and remarked to me that the forum hadn't been as 'friendly' recently. I was surprised, but I understood what he meant.
To follow Don's footy analogy, I simply think some responses are so passionate about an issue that they ''go hard at the ball'', and the player with the ball gets hit in the process. No malice intended, but I can see why feelings get hurt. In cases like that I start with the assumption that the comment is 'playing the ball', and not out to get me personally. If the writer doesn't agree with my point of view, fine- I'll have to suck it up.
In summary- please don't over-moderate the forum. I'd hate it to become so careful and PC that it was bland and boring. I enjoy the differences and the debates. But at the same time, thanks Don for reminding us all that real people with real feelings are behind these comments and we do well to ''do unto others as we'd like done to us''

Leave it as it is Gus, it's fine and you're doing a great job. Most of the people are happy most of the time which you can't really improve on.

The few occasions it happens (that I have seen), its pretty tame. And self-moderated. On occasion its a simple misinterpretation, and rectified by the 'flamee'.
I love that on this forum we can say what we want, and if someone steps over the line they are towed back, no real harm done.
Keep it easy Gus, your'e doing fine. Don't need too many rules.

This is certainly the most civilised forum I'm a member of.
Most of the instances of "attacks" are more like mis-interpretations of posts. One major difference between forum posts and RL conversations is that there are no visual cues for intent. Maybe the addition of smilie's would allow the poster to define their intent better.
Sarcasm is also often lost in written form and can be interpreted as an attack.

I haven't seen any real mean spirited attacks in the whole spoiler discussion of late - annoyance at having the game given up in the title of threads and civil, friendly requests that people give spoiler alerts. Fair enough. It's been a good discussion resulting in a general agreement that spoiler alerts should be used for those wanting to post and discuss recent results that others might still be hoping to watch fresh. All's well.
I like the idea of smilies too : )

What i hate about some of these comments are how a lot of riders think you have to ride holier than God. Yes we have road rules but sometimes they are stupid rules or they are written for cars and they have to be broken so dont give everyone a hard time about it.
and before i get sledged answer this, riding through the city early Sunday morning and you come across a red light, it doesnt turn green unless a car comes along, but there's not a car in site ANYWHERE. What do you do? Wait 20 mins for a car to activate the lights? Get off your bike, press the button, wait, wait wait, and walk across with the green man?

Would it sound silly that if the traffic light is not working properly it needs to be reported so someone eventually can fix it?
If you chose to deliberately break the law you can you really complain about the consequences if you are caught?

You can complain whenever you want to, but if its an unreasonable complaint you'll end up being dismissed as a whinger.
Nearly 9 out of 10 motor vehicle/cyclist related incidents being the fault of the motorist and occuring while riders are obeying the road rules is a justified complaint.
It very much suggests many of our road rules are inadequate in the way they are applied to active transport users.
Designed for machines, not people.

No, what im saying is that sometimes people on this site take everthing as black and white and they give other shit for the grey area. eg going through a broken red light, riding otherside a bike lane if there is glass in the lane etc. in other words if you can ride without hurting yourself or anyone else ease up on your comments to them.
I remember someone flamed a lady who took her helmet off while she rode through the south parklands, ive seen this lady and i thought it was great, she put the helmet back on when she got to the end of the park so who cares?? she was skilled enough to ride without a helmet with no traffic so why should she be flamed?
