Hey All,

I'm setting up a touring bike at the moment i've got a Surly long haul trucker. I'm looking to get some panniers. I've found some secondhand. They are Sherpa brand. I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with these? and if they are any good thanks.

I am also in the market for panniers. Did a search on AC and found this which could give you something to think about.

A problem I perceive with waterproof panniers is that there is is no small secondary bag, and no mesh bag to hold a water bottle, wet towel or wet rain gear, depending on the mesh design. One can use a heavy duty plastic bag to line the pannier.

Would appreciate feedback on panniers before I purchase.

Try BMC theyre pretty good for panniers, touring stuff etc

Ive got a set of axiom cartier I bought from Standish on Henly bch rd, good for general use lots of pockets, quite sturdy, rain proof but not totally storm proof I like the attachment system simple and easy to adjust

Lezyne stuff is good gear well made and some have a fold out storm cover

A friend of mine has some Deuter panniers he uses everyday for comuting they are holding up well, also have a fold out cover, Anaconda has a couple of brands quite well priced

Does anyone know of a local shop that stocks Ortlieb? Have you used any of their gear?

Currently interested in some Ortlieb products but yet to see an inspect. Back-Roller Classic Bicycle Panniers, volume 40 litres per pair. Plus Front-Roller Classic Bicycle Panniers, volume 25 litres per pair. Durable, waterproof polyester fabric. Four colour choices. Am favouring black & red, or black & yellow. Which colour would you choose? Will red look cleaner for longer?

For a backpack, was sure I wanted a Vaude Splash Air 20 + 5 litre in grey / black until I saw info on Ortlieb Vario Pannier / Back Pack 20 litres. The Ortlieb converts, and hoping that its helmet fixing is better than that on Vaude. The Quick-Lock2 (QL2) system allows quick fixing to the bike rack. The Vaude is a dedicated backpack (not converting to pannier) and would be more comfortable, especially with ariflow back. Any comments please?

I would recommend Ortlieb rollers.  Very sturdy, very waterproof!

Shane, I have been searching on-and-off for panniers for two months, via the web and five shops. I want four panniers (front & rear) and some shops stock only one size, or brand / model made in only one size. For example, Elliots stock Tioga cordura pannier in red or blue, one size only, and size not even stated. It appears that the click and pull release system used on Dueter and Ortlieb do not fit my new Axiom rear rack.

Heather As a member of BISA you should be able access Australian Cyclist website where you will probably find reviews of panniers and supplier details.

Clive, thanks for the hint. Went to their site and most reviews on bicycles, just like their magazines.
Kathmandu in Rundle Street has a sale of up to 50% off. Black and grey panniers, reflective strips rear and side, mounting system of 3 plastic hooks, 20 litres each, reduced from about $120 to $60 a pair.
