Hi all, so this weekend we're flying to Melbourne and want to take our bikes for the weekend.

Any ideas on where to get a couple of boxes big enough to fit our bikes?

Thx!

Any bike store should have some - they generally will pack up your bike for transport too.

easy Bekster...ask Noel at Bike Station if he has a Focus Izalco box as these have recesses for the wheels too. I sent mine to Melbs and it survived the ordeal....rode the bike back from Melbourne though.....

If you want it at the Airport - most airlines sell you boxes on the spot, about $20

Great tips, thanks guys! Have now sourced a couple of boxes from my LBS...

Would fancy riding to and from Melbourne ideally - that sounds great, consider it added to my bucket list:-)

Bekster....Great Ocean Road is a must do :)

Check beforehand that the vehicle dropping you off at the airport has enough space for the boxes. Worked out that my bike packed in a bike bag (kept the rear wheel on) required a larger vehicle, like station wagon or van. Taxi service with station wagons declined to take my bike. So AC members volunteered to drop me off at the airport at a very early hour. In 2011 passengers with usual luggage required to check-in one hour before domestic flight, and two hours beforehand with oversize luggage (bike).

Taxi service??? Where's the "service"?

Martin, think I implied that when station wagon taxi would not take my bike. Wanted me to hire a van, from memory the rate was 50% extra. Glad that a few AC members volunteered to help me out an early hour.

My neighbour has a van but could not ask him for a lift before dawn. If the 'renovated' Adelaide Airport had sensibly provided some bike lockers, he would have transported my bike during the day. Then I could have found other means to get me to the airport for the 'red-eye'. There was only the one departure for the Adelaide-Brisbane route, so no choice in time. Why do authorities always forget cyclists' needs?

i know you say you have boxes but i have a bike bag if you want to borrow it, fits one bike and has wheels to make it easy to move around.Depending on where you are happy to drop it off. I am in Blar Athol.
