Orbea Carpe H10 - thoughts?
Hi guys,
Thanks for your help on my previous discussion, I have taken what everyone has said on board (or tried to) and been around to about 6 of my LBS, and I think I have made a decision.
I am going with the Orbea Carpe H10 from Megabike in the city (there is also a megabike up in blackwood which is handy). Not seen too many reviews, but all positive from the few I found. It has full Shimano XT components (which are apparently the MB version of ultegra?), and I can get it for $1350. A little more than I initially wanted to spend, but the guy (Claud) truly took the time to listen to what I was looking at, and explained why he thought this would be a great fit for me, the components being one thing, and the disk breaks being another big factor living in Belair
This also includes all the fitting and peddle coaching (which I need as I haven't ridden with clip in shoes before), and some service package which includes 6 services in the first 3 months to ensure it fits right, with no other service required for following 12 months.
Let me know if there is any consideration I have left out.

Megabike is a favourite of mine, and Claud does some great work. He sold me a DeRosa r848 and made a lot of claims about it's value and mechanics. He was bang on. It flies up the hills and hugs the road down the hills.
Basically I'd trust those guys, and the tune-ups and services they give with the bike is super-handy. The pedal coaching will make you a faster rider that can go much further than before (at least that happened in my case!).

Have seen bucket loads of them under commuters heading in to the city each morning...very nice looking city bike.
Can't speak highly enough of Claud & the Megabike crew, they've looked after me brilliantly with my old bike as well as my new one & then the subsequent replacement after I trashed it at 3 weeks old!

Can't comment on the H10 specifically, but my partner owns a Carpe H40. Although there is a lot to like about the bike, there are few key things that are just plain crap.
First is the paint job. Bikes get bumps and knocks and paintwork gets damaged, but on the Carpe H40 it takes bugger all to chip the paint. I haven't seen a bike before with such a fragile paint job.
Secondly, even for a flat bar, it's a heavy bike. The H10 uses the same frame, but has a lighter carbon fork, but has heavier disk brakes.
One of the pluses for the H40 is that it uses a single front chain ring and 9 speed cassette. This makes a very simple set-up for a commuter, which my partner, who was new to cycling, was looking for. The H10 uses a triple chain ring and 10 speed cassette. More complex, lots of overlap with gears. A negative in my book.
Overall, after seeing and servicing a Carpe H40, I personally wouldn't go near the current Carpe range.
If looking for a good flat bar, take a Specialized* Sirrus for a ride. The Sirrus Comp is a very nice bike for the price (RRP $1199). The Sirrus Expert is basically the same bike but with road components, instead of MTB. Neither of these bikes have disk brakes, but you shouldn't really need it.
*I have no association with Specialized other than having owned and liked their bikes.

Ive owned the H30 for 3 months now and overal its a great bike, the only downsides are the Disc brakes squeal so loud its like a freight train hitting a school bus, I dont use my bell to warn walkers anymore i hit the brakes and anyones jumps! and the white seat has turned blue from my jeans, (maybe i should wear white jeans).
Other than that its a great bike.

First post....I purchased a H30 from Megabike in December last year. I got caught up in the 'shiny and new' thing rather than practicality. I got told to buy the Specialized but didn't. I purchased the H30. I have had the bike and had nothing but trouble.
I bought it because I wanted a daily commute (17km to work one way). So I was doing about 170km per week if I made it through the 5 days.
This is in short. Essentially it's a timeline of my issues. I ride the bike along linear park bikepath each day.
To start with;
Day 1, rode it home and the chain had a stuck pin. It should've been tested before it left the premises. Not only that, but I couldn't engage 9th gear at all.
I took it back and got told "you need to adjust the gears". Mate, no I don't.
Day 2, with new chain in tow, the chain falls off the front cog (inwards). It proceeded to fall off at least 5 times a week. That meant I had grease all over the white handlebars.
Day 3-90, same issues.
Day 91'ish after another new chain and some tinkering of the gearing system it fell off on the way home.
Day 92-now. Only assessment I can make is that the chain falls off more when its greased..
On the final day of my bike's life (yes, life), the stabilsing bar in the seat broke. It's a steel bar for heaven's sake. So I took it in and it sounded the death knell for my H30.
I have been dealing with Claud and he's never seen it happen to a H30. He's offered me a credit on a H20 or H10 which I pick up tomorrow. He's been very good however one criticism I do have is that they had no history of my problems, so each "issue" was dealt with separately. That's something I've discussed with him directly. He said they thought I had a H10.
Hopefully my 'new' bike will be a little better in the resiliance stakes.

I can't comment on the Orbea, and I've never owned a flat bar. BUT friends own Avanti Blades. Never heard anything bad about them. And what I really like is the service I get from my local Avanti shop (I have an Avanti road bike). Worth a thought...
