Didnt think there would be much traffic today so went up Greenhill Rd to Lofty instead of going up the Freeway track.

Wont do that again in a hurry! Very narrow, rough surface, scary traffic and a very long way!!!

Thanks to Mad Dog for giving me a hand along the way.

Yes, if you want to avoid traffic then ealier is better. However, I've ridden Greenhill maybe a hundred times or more at every different time of day and the traffic has never really been a bother. Every motorist seems to be much more curteous on this road for some reason. It is the best gauge of a cyclists skill and ability though. If you can climb or descend it well then you won't have a problem with any other road in Adelaide.

I agree with Paul. I always (nearly always?) find the traffic very courteous when I'm going up. I just keep as close to the left as possible and always assume there is a car behind me. Going down, if possible I try and sit behind a car and stay with them the whole way down (so I'm not worrying about cars wanting to pass me).

Also agree, I ride it about 10am on a tuesday or thursday and found the cars passing me on the way up to be great.  If only they knew that an elbow flick meant that it was clear for them to pass. ;)

I go the big arm wave. Not quite an elvis windmill but not far off.

Yeah nice climb well done maximus. I did it last year in bad weather - never again! Lucky to be alive. Give me a veloway any day.

Yes well done maximus,  I too have done the climb but only once.  I did enjoy it but like everyone else has said it is narrow.  I had no issues with cars all being courteous to me.  Have come down it a few times usually in the evenings after climbing to Lofty..it's a great coming down if you like going fast.   As Duncan said if you can catch and sit behind a car then that makes the descent a bit less stressful.    Also...consider instead of coming down greenhill riding across to Nortons..that ride is sensational across woods hill rd.  I started doing that recently instead of coming down Greenhill.

I would rate it as the toughest climb in Adelaide, it's reasonably long and there are no easy sections like the freeway. I usually go up at 6-6.30 on a Sunday morning so traffic is fine, this morning I got passed by 2 cars. Coming down is a hoot, most cars can't keep up especially near the top, the road surface is pretty good and there is really only 1 nasty corner, having said that it's not much fun going down in the wet.
