The roads have been closed off with the assistance of the ACC (cheers Steve!) and there will be food and coffee vendors around the place. So come on down, cheers on the riders - you might even know a few, and support cycling in this great city

Whitmore Square is a great day of racing, whether you are competing or spectating. Competitors get a rare opportunity to race on a closed road and spectators can see 100% of the action from anywhere around the circuit.
The schedule is chockers with junior crits, graded crits, wheel races and culminates in the State Elite and U19s Criterium Championship.
If you're not racing on Sunday, go for a spin to Whitmore Square and check it out.
Permalink Reply by Trent on February 10, 2012 at 10:57 forgive me for a daft question but what is a "wheel race"?
Not a daft question at all. A wheel race is a handicap race over a specified distance. How it works at Whitmore Square is that riders are given a 'mark' based upon their performances or grading and then the riders line-up (usually with a holder) at various points around the circuit awaiting the starter's gun. The fastest riders will be off 'scratch', which means they have to cover the full distance. An old fat bloke like me might have a mark of 250 metres, which means I line up at the 250m point on the circuit (i.e. 250m in front of the scratch markers). When the gun goes we all race like mad and the first person over the line, regardless of your mark, is the winner. I think Whitmore Square wheel races are usually over two laps. It's good to watch too because the scratch markers cut a path through the field trying to catch the 'limit markers' (those that have the biggest head-start).
