Do any of the other Strava users know what has happenned to the "longer" Norton Summit segment - there used t be one that started at the turn off from Magill Rd and finished where the current segment finished, but was around 5.6km whereas only the shorter one is there now (the one that starts just past Glen Stuart rd).

Just guessing here...

I checked my Strava for last Saturday's ride and the 5.6 km segment is showing. Try using display all segments. Damien Howson has a time of 11.29 on the segment and a speed of 28.7 km/h

Permalink Reply by Matt Jones on February 23, 2012 at 21:38 Strava only shows the "popular" segments. It makes the others hidden, have a look on your rides at the bottom it will tell you the hidden segments. My Money is on it being there.

I am not sure of the formula used but it uses the heart rate, total weight including bike weight and for hills the VAM. Perhaps if you approached Strava they may tell you the formula. I am pretty confident it does not take wind direction into account. The Strava glossary is not much help.
Average power gives your average power amount during the ride, expressed in Watts (a measure of how much energy you are placing into the pedals). This is inclusive of the entire ride, and so it takes coasting into account as well. Average power is most accurately measured through a power meter, though if you don't have a power meter we give a rough approximation through our power estimator.

possibly similar to that?
Power and Calorie estimates are closely related, here's another link that explains how different available data sources impact the calculations.

Permalink Reply by Tim B on February 24, 2012 at 7:28 Yep, my Magill Rd to Norton 5.6km segment has gone as well. It was there a few days ago.....
Permalink Reply by Dahondude on February 24, 2012 at 10:16 I can currently see:
Norton Summit Climb : 5km
ASC Norton Summit Climb 5.6km
Norton Summit 5.5 km
Full Norton - bridge to gates 6.2km
Norton Short 5.1km
The problem is that, unlike Hillclimbr and Cycle2Max (where one person sets the start and finish point), on Strava anyone can set a segment so you end up with lots of segments traversing the same piece of road, all with very minor differences in the start/finish point.
Also people want to be able to time themself on whatever stretch of road they want so you get segments in some very weird places (look at all the 200 m long segments between Glenelg and Outer Harbour).
You could always visit the Strava support page and ask them why your segment has disappeared.
Permalink Reply by Tim B on February 24, 2012 at 12:45 Just to clarify, it wasn't "my" segment (that I created myself) that disappeared, it was the one that seems to be picked up by default which was presumably created by someone else that may have deleted it or made it private as dicussed above. Guess I'll just create my own, no dramas.
